Scientist - Molecular Biology and Microbiology B. subtilis Synthorx is a pharmaceutical company that is developing a revolutionary synthetic biology technology for creating recombinant protein-based therapies with novel chemistries. Using this platform technology, we are creating designer biologic therapeutics for immune oncology, auto-immune disorders, and other areas of high unmet medical need. The Synthorx platform is based on the creation of semi-synthetic organisms that by virtue of an unnatural base pair, are able to produce proteins with non-canonical amino acids for development as therapeutics. Synthorx has developed an E. coli-based semi-synthetic organism and is now working to extend the technology to B. subtilis. We are seeking a dynamic, highly dedicated and rigorous scientist to join our team to help design and build this next-generation of our platform technology. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in the genetic manipulation of prokaryotic organisms, especially, but not necessarily B. subtilis.

Key Responsibilities:

This position will be an integral part of a new team focusing on novel platforms for protein expression, strain design and engineering. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, planning, performance, and analysis of molecular biology and microbiology experiments to optimize the expression of difficult to express therapeutic protein candidates using the Synthorx technology. Regular activities will include designing and performing molecular biology for cloning, transforming microbial strains and generating/testing novel constructs and strains for high-level protein expression. We hope to bring in an individual with strong initiative and desire to make a positive impact on the team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively work within a highly collaborative environment with other scientific members and make individual contributions of high impact.

Required Qualifications:
• PhD in genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field.
• Experience with B. subtilis would be a plus, but not necessary.
• Bacterial genetics, especially with B. subtilis.
• Bacterial physiology, including DNA replication/repair, transcription and translation; especially
with B. subtilis.
• DNA assembly methods.
• Testing and optimizing recombinant protein expression in microbial hosts.
• Orthogonal translation systems. Hands-on knowledge of amber suppression is a plus.
• Highly creative and innovative scientist with a drive to generate and translate new ideas into
practical advances.
• Self-motivated and independent but demonstrated ability to coordinate and work well as part of
a research team.
• Ability to work well in sight of aggressive timelines and excellence in multitasking.
