General Position Summary/Purpose:

Under the supervision of the EHS Manager, this position will be accountable for furthering the strategic mission of work-related injury/illness prevention and employee health support with medical surveillance at the West Coast AbbVie sites.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:
  • Work with safety to coordinate the medical surveillance program including scheduling initial examinations, needed follow-up and periodic examinations. Evaluate examination results for completeness and HIPAA compliance.
  • Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for securing and maintaining all medical documentation obtained from designated 3rd party occupational health clinic and other employee-provided medical documents.
  • Initiate interaction with the designated 3rd party occupational health clinic to facilitate any needed process improvements.
  • Arrange initial medical appointments with designated 3rd party occupational health clinic upon notification of work-related illness/injury.
  • Ensure California form DWC1 is provided to any employee with a work-related injury/illness as defined by California regulations.
  • Involvement with work-related case management to ensure Matrix, 3rd party administrator, has all needed documentation. Ensure employee contacts Matrix promptly after any work-related injury/illness.
  • Clarify ambiguous restrictions and communicate restrictions to employee management and Safety representative. Participate in determining applicability of restrictions based on employee's job function.
  • Facilitate work-related return to work as needed.
  • Work with the safety representative to identify medical treatment that would affect OSHA Recordability.
  • Work with safety to validate OSHA log.
  • Support the ergonomic program including performing evaluations, documentation and coordination with safety regarding appropriate equipment.
  • Integrate occupational safety and health protection efforts with health promotion and other workplace activities to prevent illness and injury.
  • Ensure any work-related international travel medicine is provided through 3rd party Travel Medicine company.
  • Serve as a liaison to identify concerns related to the work-related injury/illness and workers' compensation cases and bring information forward to Global Occupational Health.
  • Assure confidentiality of personal health information and comply with AbbVie's Code of Conduct and Business Ethics as well as all legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Registered nurse with a current unencumbered California license
  • Experience working with workers' compensation in California
  • Experience working independently in an occupational health clinic
  • Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations, specifically recordkeeping
  • Strong working knowledge of California workers' compensation laws
  • Strong work history of workers' compensation medical management
  • A bility to work cross-functionally with other members of AbbVie
  • Ability to manage projects at a high level
  • Excellent organizational skill
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Maintain all medical information per legal, HIPAA and ethical requirements
  • Bachelor of Science with a focus in occupational health services or public health
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist
  • Certified workers' compensation case manager
  • At least 3-5 years working with workers' compensation in California
  • At least 3-5 years working independently in an occupational health clinic
