We are currently seeking a Director, Safety Assessment-Toxicology. This position is located in Columbus, OH (West Jefferson, OH).

JOB SUMMARY

Battelle’s Life Science Research Center offers a staff of highly trained scientist and technicians, and state of the art facilities to support our clients’ toxicology, safety pharmacology, and inhalation research programs. Our multidisciplinary integrated approach to providing critical solutions for our pharmaceuticals, biotech, agrichemical, industrial, and government clients increases the speed of the development while maintaining quality and compliance. 

The Director of Safety Assessment will conduct nonclinical toxicology studies and/or routine and specialized laboratory procedures in support of safety assessments, including general toxicity, reproductive toxicology/DART, inhalation, and safety pharmacology studies. The individual will serve as a leader in the toxicology organization and manage the study directors, study coordinators, and project leaders, as well as interact with principal investigators, program managers, members of project teams and other departments. A key responsibility will include toxicology, DART and safety pharmacology studies conducted at Battelle for internal and external clients- study design, protocol generation, study execution and completion of high quality final reports in a GLP-compliant environment. The Director of Safety Assessment will report to the VP, Life & Lab Sciences.

This position is responsible for the organization, management, and business performance of non-clinical toxicology studies. Develops and implements strategic business and market plans which contribute to the group’s overall operating results through financial management of gross business volume, capital equipment and operating budgets. Manages the overall financial performance of the toxicology department as well as significant resources and staff in one or multiple locations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure Battelle’s staff, facilities, and capabilities are commiserate with the scientific, regulatory, and quality requirements of our clients.
  • Develop and implements strategic, operational and scientific plans for the Safety Assessment group which define the market focus and operational services for Battelle’s clients.
  • Define new business areas of scientific development and contribute to the business decisions to grow Battelle’s overall capabilities.
  • Provide key client management and establish long-term client relationships to cultivate and develop future business potential.
  • Perform manpower planning and assures appropriate staffing levels and skill mix commensurate with the business.
  • Directs and organizes staff assignments to various projects.
  • Manages human resource activities such as developing recruiting strategy and hiring staff, establishing performance goals and appraising performance, and providing opportunities for career development. Manages relationships of staff and other groups. Provides necessary training and mentor opportunities for staff.
  • Manage non-staff resources, including laboratories, instruments, procedures, and equipment, to ensure their readiness and availability to support client needs.
  • Implement, executes and communicates the policies and strategic direction of senior leadership to staff.
  • Ensuring high-quality review and approval of proposals, reports, plans, and papers that go outside the Group.

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • A PhD in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Pathology or relevant life science and a 10+ years' applicable experience with a minimum of 5 years’ management experience.
  • Directly relevant experience with toxicology study design and execution in a CRO, Pharmaceutical or Government setting.
  • Consistent record of impactful performance and documented accomplishments in advancing toxicology and safety assessment, impacting business and operational processes, and personnel management.
  • A track record of experience and leadership in the area risk assessment and hazard communication is required.
  • Sufficient communication skills to effectively interact with top management internally and with client organizations, subcontractors, consultants, staff and across multiple departments (i.e. Toxicology, Pharmacology, Inhalation).
  • Critical human relation skills to understand, select, develop and motivate others.
  • Ability to lead others in the achievement of goals.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization across multiple departments (i.e. Toxicology, Pharmacology, Inhalation)
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of FDA, EPA, and OECD Good Laboratory Practice regulations.
  • A customer service focus and history of successful client interactions.

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED

  • Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology certified OR DABT eligible - if not already certified, candidate will be required to become board certified within one year of hire date.
