Job Details

Known for its scientific and operational excellence, Regeneron is a leading science-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Regeneron commercializes medicines for eye diseases, high LDL-cholesterol, atopic dermatitis and a rare inflammatory condition and has product candidates in development in other areas of high unmet medical need, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, pain, cancer and infectious diseases.

These positions are in Cardiovascular & Renal Diseases within Therapeutic Focus Areas in Tarrytown, NY. There are 4 openings for Summer 2020. Each opening is described below.

Position 1:
Establish foundational tissue culture techniques and knowledge. Design experimental plans. Establish and implement assays. Modelong lung fibrosis in in vitro co-culture system.

Position 2:
This student will perform in vitro experiments such as assay development and may be involved in establishing a Thrombosis project in vitro model using multiple biomarker assays.

Position 3:
This position is for a summer internship in the area of cardiovascular research. Dysregulation of cardiac metabolism has been associated with many inherited and acquired forms of cardiovascular disease and is a recognized component of heart failure. We are investigating the molecular mechanisms that initiate and drive cardiac metabolic remodeling and mitochondrial dysfunction using research models of heart failure. The goal of this internship is to perform experiments using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) and mouse cardiomyocytes at baseline and in experimental models of cardiovascular disease. The successful intern candidate will conduct studies measuring aspects of energy transfer in the heart that are required to support cardiac contraction. Specifically, these ex-vivo and in-vitro assays will involve quantification of substrates for fuel transport, utilization, and energy production to explore their contribution to heart failure progression and responses with therapeutic intervention. The Intern will learn cutting-edge techniques including gene expression analysis, cell culture, cell metabolic assays, cell fixation and staining, and experimental model of heart failure. This is an integrated research group seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic intern eager to participate in a fun and challenging learning experience.

Position 4:
This position is going to get involved in dissecting the contribution of the platelets and coagulation factor in clot formation, stability and fibrinolysis. This project will use whole blood, platelet poor plasma (PPP) , platelet rich plasma (PRP) and washed platelets because each of these preparations have all components to only one component needed to form a clot. One idea is to use platelet aggregometry, turbidity assay and the thromboelastography assay to define the contribution of platelets and/or coagulation factors in clot formation and stability using different triggersà one that activate platelets (ADP) and ones that activate both platelets and the coagulation factor pathway (EA vs thrombin vs TF). Question will come up like is there a difference in the stability of the clot in the TEG between these triggers and is there a difference in fibrinolysis if tPA is added later. In the platelet aggregometry, we should be able to measure the rate and % aggregation between PRP vs washed . Other things we could ask is whether there are differences in the TEG curves (amplitude, slope and fibrinolysis) between whole blood, PRP, and washed platelets. Can a "clot" be formed in the absence of coagulation factors? That can be answered with trying washed platelets in TEG.
