Summary:
Supervises laboratory animal facility providing oversight of daily operations. Maintains Vivarium to inspection- ready condition at all times. Ensures staffing levels are appropriate to ensure proper care and compliance with department Standard Operating Procedures and policies. Advises workers regarding requirements for compliance with safety, and state and federal guidelines for operation of research facility. Orders equipment as required within signing authority level.

Responsibilities:
- Supervises and coordinates activities of workers involved in operations of animal research facility: arranges purchase of items, such as animal feed, bedding, and supplies.
- Oversees the animal care facility by providing work direction to Animal Care Technicians.
- Plans, schedules and assigns work to ensure efficient utilization of manpower, equipment and facilities.
- Reassigns team to other assignments based on staffing needs. Verifies time for FTE reporting and pay purposes.
- Instructs workers regarding procedures, such as feeding and cleaning schedules and documentation.
- Reviews work of personnel to determine established procedures are followed and to verify accuracy of documentation.
- Maintains accurate records and inventories related to supplies, equipment, and receipt and assignment of animals.
- Conducts inspections of animal facilities to ensure the maintenance of required sanitation standards; observe and report noticeable or unusual changes in animals.
- Oversees maintenance of the equipment within the research animal facility
- Provides training of animal husbandry staff. Ensures checklist of procedures for new hires completed and follow-up to ensure completion of missing items.
- Collaborates on the development of animal care facilities processes and policies.
- Provides input and writes initial performance evaluations for assigned staff. Provides input into hiring, termination and disciplinary actions for team.
- Maintains facility documentation and tracking reports as necessary
- Provides input to database development.
- Responds to after hour emergency calls
- Assumes the duties of Manager in his/her absence
- Performs other duties as may be required.

Experience
Bachelor of Science degree in the biological sciences or veterinary technology is preferred. A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in laboratory animal science and technology required. AALAS certification at the LAT level is required or attainable within 1 year. Pursuit of the LATg/CMAR certification by AALAS is desirable.

Required Skills
Knowledge of applicable regulations regarding the proper standards of animal care and use in a research environment, esp. substantial understanding of 'The Guide'. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to interact effectively with coworkers and key stakeholders in other disciplines to develop excellent communication and rapport, able to collaborate/inspire others, strong management and organizational skills, has creative ideas, able to motivate staff, effective time management, and advanced computer skills, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro).
