The Opportunity:

We have an opportunity available for a Director of Breakthrough Technologies to join CSL Behring’s R&D team at our site in Melbourne, Australia. This position engages in innovation related activities through an Innovation Group that focuses on discovering, developing and translating technologies through internal activities and via collaborations with external parties.

The Innovation Group aims to quickly identify, assess, develop and translate new technologies through engagement with global subject matter experts and external collaborators. This is facilitated through an agile structure resulting from Senior Management sponsorship and empowerment, close relationship with R&D functions, operational business units, dedicated funding and access to project management, legal and IP support.

Areas of focus of the group include exploratory bioprocess development, assessment of novel bioprocessing technologies, development of in-line and offline analytics, identification of new bio-therapeutic based product opportunities and the assessment of data compilation and process control software.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Plasma Product Development, this position plays a key role in CSL Behring’s PPD group initiative to develop a new forward thinking mind- set aiming to advance innovations that are tangible and that can deliver medium term benefits to the business. The position will be recognized as an integral component of the overall company’s technology monitoring activities.

The position will be directly responsible for identifying and communicating strategic options, day-to-day management and ensuring the outcome of key deliverables.  To achieve this, it will require close working with CSL’s subject matter experts to identify operational needs, and internal and external experts to identify disruptive trends and technologies that are relevant to the company’s strategic needs.

Interaction with project management business development, legal and intellectual property representatives will be important to address technology transfer, business case, confidentiality and intellectual property issues.

To be successful in this position you will possess:

  • Combination of Education and appropriate experience, such as BS/BA + 15 years, MS/MA +15 years; or Ph.D. + 10 years in a relevant life science/engineering field.
  • Experience with leading R&D groups. 
  • Knowledge of and competency in a wide variety of protein purification methods, familiarity with protein formulation, analytical techniques, and evaluating and applying new technologies with the potential to enhance  process development and manufacturing. 
  • Acknowledged scientific leader with recognized IP/Publication record.
  • Experience with scouting and implementing new technologies.
  • Experience in collaborations with groups within and outside of the company.
  • Significant managerial experience.
