Amgen is seeking a Director of Corporate Affairs - Intercontinental Region (ICON) to be based at our corporate campus located in Thousand Oaks, California. The Director will report directly to the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs - Global Commercial Operations and will also serve on the Amgen ICON Leadership Team.

The Director of Corporate Affairs - ICON is responsible for driving external and internal communication strategy, planning, and implementation for the Intercontinental Region (all regions except Europe / Asia / Japan). Further, the Director will oversee all external product communication (issues management, approvals, data publications, launches) in close partnership with the relevant global and regional Corporate Affairs colleagues (i.e., Research & Development, Content Strategy and Media Relations), and cross-functional business partners (i.e., Medical, Regulatory, Compliance, Legal, Advocacy, Value, Access and Policy).

Key Responsibilities of the Director of Corporate Affairs - ICON will include:
  • Acts as the communication counsel and support for the ICON leadership team, including the senior vice president of Intercontinental Commercial Operations
  • Oversees ICON-wide internal communication, including all-staff meetings, support for leadership presentations, and other key communication activities
  • Manages ICON Corporate Affairs staff
  • Maintains and upgrades ICON communication processes and policies
  • Ensures Corporate Affairs resources are deployed on highest business priorities to deliver greatest value
  • Partners with global and regional colleagues to ensure issues and crisis management preparedness and handle communication issues in partnership with the relevant Global Corporate Affairs colleagues
  • Acts as an advocate, champion and expert for ICON within the wider Global Corporate Affairs team and serve as a role model for the function
  • Shares and adopts best practices from across the Amgen regions and global team


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Corporate Affairs experience

OR

Master's degree and 7 years of Corporate Affairs experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 9 years of Corporate Affairs experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or healthcare public relations, and/or corporate experience
  • 10+ years of related experience working in-house for a multinational company or within a Public Relations agency serving multinationals
  • Bachelor's Degree in public relations, communications or journalism or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong oral and presentation skills; ability to negotiate and persuade
  • Superior writing skills and proven media relations skills that are results-oriented
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deal with rapidly changing priorities
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and manage staff and vendors
  • Proven track-record leading, developing and empowering individuals and teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
  • Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment
  • Understands nuances and details of specific company positions or issues that could affect communications tactics
  • Policy experience and crisis management experience
  • Independently judges risks and benefits from a communication perspective and makes a persuasive case for taking calculated risks in the organization's best interest
  • Shows organizational courage by tactfully challenging executives when providing communications counsel and feedback
  • Applies sound judgment and innovative thinking to resolve problems and take advantage of opportunities
