Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products - Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti - and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie in Redwood City, CA location.

We are seeking a Senior / Principal Scientist to join our Cell Therapy CMC team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing processes and ensuring timely manufacturing and related CMC deliverables of early stage cell therapy products (such as CAR-T); envisioning, investigating and addressing associated scientific and technical challenges; effectively communicating and actively engaging with external CDMOs, collaborators and vendors to ensure timelines are met; generating and reviewing technical reports and technology transfer documents; and independently conceiving, executing and communicating novel multi-disciplinary development strategies to achieve project goals.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Understand and develop processes for cell therapy projects.
  • Identify and solve product and production related issues.
  • Communicate and actively engage with external vendors, CDMOs and collaborators.
  • Facilitate management of timelines, identification of risks and their mitigation.
  • Support the generation and review technical, regulatory and other project associated documents.
  • Anticipate and help resolve project and resource priority conflicts.
  • Champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
  • Participate and present at meetings.


Principal Scientist: BS or equivalent and extensive, typically 14+; MS or equivalent with typically 12+; PhD with typically 6+ years of experience in scientific area of discipline.

Senior Scientist: BS or equivalent and extensive, typically 12+; MS or equivalent with typically 10+; PhD with typically 4+ years of experience in scientific area of discipline.
  • Demonstrated good understanding and experience with manufacturing processes of cell therapy products such as CAR-Ts.
  • Experience in working with cell therapy CDMOs and vendors to achieve project goals and timelines.
  • Experience in developing technical reports and documents to support CMC.
  • Experience with GMP manufacturing of cell therapy products is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and verbal communication skills.
