Job Details

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Providing veterinary diagnostic, surgical and treatment services for research animals including mice, aquatics, and nonhuman primates
  • Working as part of a multi-faceted team to review and implement guidelines and administer procedures to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and standards required to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use program
  • Resolving issues pertaining to laboratory animal husbandry, health and welfare
  • Providing support for the NCI-Bethesda Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Performing a variety of both invasive and noninvasive surgical procedures in rodents and nonhuman primates
  • Assisting with training programs for animal caretakers, technicians and research staff who utilize research animals
  • Reviewing and implementing standard operating procedures governing research animals including rodents, aquatics, and nonhuman primates
  • Providing consultative services to scientific and technical personnel pertaining to the selection and use of animal models
  • Assisting in development, design, and ongoing assessment of animal research protocols and animal holding facilities
  • Participating in the rotating weekend/holiday on-call schedule
  • Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be in areas where such materials are used
  • Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • Completion of ACLAM-recognized formal residency program in laboratory animal medicine or a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S. and must be able to obtain Maryland licensure
  • Generally, has four (4) years of supervisory experience or leading teams or projects
  • Must be able to function independently in an animal research facility environment, and in support of investigators engaged in animal research
  • Ability to independently identify and evaluate animal health issues, provide clinical diagnoses, therapeutics and post-procedural care for research animals
  • Identification of regulatory/compliance issues and the ability to work with the IACUC and veterinary staff to resolve issues
  • Possess a detailed comprehension of regulatory requirements and AAALAC standards
  • Must participate in the occupational health program, medical health screenings, and similar. Must understand that the position has the risk for exposure to zoonotic agents as well as other hazardous agents or chemicals
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ACLAM Board Certification
  • IACUC Experience
  • USDA Accreditation
  • Experience with surgical procedures in nonhuman primates
  • Experience with rodent models in cancer research
  • Experience in training personnel including investigators and technicians
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with others

JOB HAZARDS OR REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidate will be entering an animal facility or have the potential for exposure to animal allergens
  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to animal(s) and/or animal material(s)
  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to infectious material(s) or Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM), requiring medical clearance and immunization in accordance with protocol requirements
  • Candidate would be working with or have the potential for exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, requiring medical clearance and immunizations in accordance with protocol requirements
  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to Vaccinia virus, requiring medical clearance and immunizations in accordance with protocol requirements
  • Candidate will be working with or have the potential for exposure to Diphtheria toxin, requiring medical clearance and immunizations in accordance with protocol requirements
  • Candidate is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
  • Candidate would be working in or have the potential for exposure to high noise levels for extended period of time. This may require a medical clearance and enrollment into the Hearing Conservation Program
  • Candidate is subject to the following environmental conditions such as working outdoors, high humidity areas indoors, dampness and chilling, dry atmospheric conditions, etc. as part of the job
  • Candidate would be working with radioactive materials and requires them to become an approved radiation worker
