We are looking for an EHS Specialist with a strong industrial hygiene background to join our organization and support th e R&D pharmaceutical pilot plant and other functional areas. The role will also provide support for the process safety program. This position is within the R&D EHS organization and is located out of our North Chicago, IL location.

Key focus areas include providing industrial hygiene support and process safety program support for the pilot plant. Together with EHS, Operations & Engineering, the EHS Specialist will improve overall safety performance. This individual will support projects of varying scope that will encompass multiple aspects of industrial hygiene and process safety.

Responsible for implementation, and maintenance of specific environmental, health and safety (EHS) programs as assigned to ensure regulatory and internal compliance, reduce risk to the operations and employees, As related to the EHS programs assigned, the position will assess risk and will create programs, policies, procedures, assessments, and training materials as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of the industrial hygiene program for business areas supported by the NC R&D EHS team.
  • Establish an industrial hygiene monitoring plan, execute the monitoring plan and track progress.
  • Perform hygiene monitoring, author reports and communicate results to business areas.
  • Perform risk assessments, make decisions which consideration of facts and data at handle and implement appropriate actions.
  • Support Process Safety activities within the R&D pharmaceutical pilot plant with AbbVie internal standards and OSHA PSM in coordination with the Senior EHS Specialist.
  • Review process safety information, assess hazards and recommend approaches that reduce employee's exposure to work hazards.
  • Assist with Process Safety Management programs, examples include:
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) including tracking and close out of action items
    • Management of Change (MOC) program
    • Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) for new and modified equipment and processes
  • Revise operating procedures working with various teams within the organization.
  • Participate on cross functional teams to meet EHS objectives.
  • Monitor regulatory requirements/trends, conduct analyses to ensure compliance with both regulatory and internal standards.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, training materials and conduct training.
  • Use persuasive techniques to influence others without reliance on formal authority, define the needs of various parties, and negotiate agreements acceptable to all parties.
  • Communicate compliance status, key performance Indicators, trends, priority issues and business impact to key stakeholders.
  • Conduct incident investigations, identify root causes, and implement improvement/action plans to prevent similar incidents from occurring


  • Bachelor's Degree (EHS related) plus 3 years of EHS related experience or Masters Degree (EHS related) plus 2 years of EHS related experience. EHS Certification CIH, CSP etc. preferred.
  • Two years in-field industrial hygiene experience.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical or chemical industry preferred.
  • Working experience in the following areas: implementing industrial hygiene program, ensuring compliance with EHS regulatory requirements, conducting incident investigations, and work effectively in cross functional teams.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal/ external colleagues/stakeholders and resolve conflict constructively.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment; plan, organize, delegate and follow-up on workflow, to meet goals and objectives.
