Amgen is seeking a Director of Corporate Affairs - Corporate Functions and Amgen Foundation who will report to the Vice President of Corporate Affairs. The position is located at Amgen's global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California.

The Director of Corporate Affairs - Corporate Functions and Amgen Foundation will Develop and execute external and internal communication strategies that drive Amgen's reputation as well as Provide communications counsel to senior leadership at the Amgen Foundation and across Amgen's Corporate Functions, with a focus on Human Resources, Corporate Philanthropy, Business Development, and Strategy, Commercialization & Innovation. The Director work directly with functional Senior Vice Presidents (SVPs) and Vice Presidents (VPs) to identify needs, objectives and strategies to create effective and meaningful communications for the enterprise. Further, the incumbent will lead development of communication strategy, content and materials to convey the Amgen Corporate and functional narrative, drive key external and internal initiatives and support a positive business climate globally.

Key responsibilities of the Director of Corporate Affairs - Corporate Functions and Amgen Foundation include:
  • Establishes a balance among the clients' communications and the overall campaign activity across the enterprise; counsel on both timing and content to ensure the highest level of effectiveness
  • Increases awareness across enterprise functional leaders of Amgen's communications activities, company narrative and activities, crisis & risk management scenarios, competitive information through measurement and active reporting
  • Develops communications materials, including news releases, Q&A documents, videos, toolkits and social posts to support key milestones/initiatives
  • Coordinates with regional and affiliate communicators to ensure global pull-through of milestones/initiatives, as appropriate
  • Proactively works with enterprise media team to garner favorable press coverage with business, health, trade and consumer press and long-lead coverage spanning a variety of topics of key importance to Amgen; accountable for relationships with key trade media supporting the Amgen Foundation and Corporate Functions
  • Anticipates and prepares company spokespeople and third-party spokespersons (where appropriate) for issues or events, including media training


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Corporate Affairs and/or Communications and/or Public Relations experience

OR

Master's degree and 7 years of Corporate Affairs and/or Communications and/or Public Relations experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 9 years of Corporate Affairs and/or Communications and/or Public Relations experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to interface and influence behaviors and outcomes at all levels
  • 2+ years' experience working with and leading communications for C-suite executives
  • 2+ years' validated experience developing/implementing strategic communication plans with foresight in anticipating and solving complex communication issues
  • 4+ years of media / journalist experience - experience in maintaining relationships, ability to pitch and highly effective at identifying "big picture" stories that are of interest to premier publications
  • Superior verbal and writing communication skills including the ability to understand and translate complex scientific language
  • Strategic thinker with ability to think quickly, analytically and creatively to accommodate a dynamic environment to develop actionable programs that address business objectives
  • High emotional intelligence coupled with refined interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
  • Strong project management and facilitation skills
