Summary / purpose of the position

The Clinical Sales Specialist, Rare Diseases, is a field-based sales position accountable for achieving or exceeding regional performance targets/metrics, for one or more products, in its assigned geography and for contributing to the overall performance of the regional and national sales teams.

The Clinical Sales Specialist is responsible for developing long-term, sustainable accounts in order to generate initial appropriate use of Ipsen products and to grow sales volume over time. The selling environment is one of complex/technical information exchange entirely based on approved resources and messages and consistent with the approved label(s). Exchanges with customers are designed to provide an accurate complete, fair and balanced presentation of Ipsen's products and services.

This role requires scientific acumen, strong sales skills, and the ability to clearly communicate disease, diagnosis and product information that will enable customers to diagnose, prescribe, recommend or administer Ipsen products safely and effectively.

Success in this role requires collaboration with Care Coordination, Patient Education, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Analytics, and other colleagues to ensure appropriate information exchange and successful implementation of programs. This position also requires fulfilling important administrative obligations.

Incumbents in the Clinical Sales Specialist role, as all other employees, are fully accountable for compliance with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Ipsen activities.

Main responsibilities / job expectations
  • Execute sales strategies and plans as directed and trained
  • Achieve or exceed objectives associated with assigned brands. These may include sales, share, and other quantitative and qualitative KPIs as determined in a periodic basis
  • Effectively and professionally navigate through complex multi-stakeholder organizations including integrated networks, hospitals and healthcare communities
  • Manage the assigned geography and customer accounts in an efficient manner, following principles of key physician/account prioritization, daily call reporting, and resource utilization
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with customers, guided by the best interests of patients, and bound by Ipsen policies and procedures
  • Engage in in-depth conversations with physicians and other healthcare professionals entirely based on approved resources and messages and consistent with the approved label(s)
  • Educate healthcare professionals (HCPs) on the signs and symptoms of the diseases with the goal of facilitating appropriate evaluation, diagnosis and treatment
  • Attend local, regional and national medical society meetings as directed
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional team members to identify and resolve customer needs appropriately and with a high sense of urgency
  • Foster team effectiveness and accomplishment of shared goals by sharing knowledge, experience, and information between and amongst partners
  • Participate in strategic territory and region planning sessions and execute within a team environment.
  • Attend local, regional and national meetings as directed
  • Contribute to BU and company strategies based on robust knowledge of local healthcare and customer environment and trends
  • Review and analyze market/customer data to support and execute strategic planning
  • Operate the territory within the assigned expense budget.
  • Develop and deliver clear and comprehensive business reviews to management as required
  • Identify potential significant (+ or -) deviations as early as possible and provide management updates
  • When course correction is required recommend or make adjustments with a sense of urgency
  • Act in full compliance with all laws, regulations and policies
  • Utilize only approved resources and messages to meet goals and targets

Experience and Education

Incumbents should have, as a minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • MBA, MSc, Nursing and other advanced degrees are a plus
  • Minimum 8 years life-sciences experience, including at least 5 in rare or specialty areas, and at least 3 years in specialty biopharma sales
  • Experience in relevant therapeutic area a plus
  • Experience working with products distributed via specialty pharmacies and supported by patient services/hubs
  • Proven track record for consistently meeting or exceeding quantitative and qualitative targets
  • Demonstrated understanding of the payer and clinical landscape, especially in specialty & rare diseases
  • Proven patient centricity demonstrated by empathy, understanding and commitment to support
  • Superior presentation, organization, administration and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently (subject to policies and procedures) with minimum administrative support
  • Demonstrated abilities to interact with internal and external stakeholders, including marketing, market access, medical, thought leaders, provider organizations, and others
  • Demonstrated commitment to not only being accountable for own compliance, but also for championing compliance by others.
