Job Details

At Amgen, our mission is serving patients. Our staff are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of science to transform medicine and turn the tide on serious illnesses. Central to achieving this mission is our "people-first" philosophy. We recruit the best talent, build an environment that facilitates career growth, and provide staff with the opportunity to make significant contributions for patients and our business.
The Clinical Biomarkers & Diagnostics department at Amgen is seeking a highly motivated Director of Computational Biology and will work out of our South San Francisco or Thousand Oaks research sites.
The Computational Biology group is responsible for biomarker data analysis for all Amgen's first-in-human studies in all therapeutic areas. In that capacity, we conduct the statistical analysis of clinical biomarker data to demonstrate the pharmacodynamic effects of our therapeutics and in the pursuit of biomarker discoveries that will aid in drug development and patient stratification.

Position Responsibilities
Work cross-functionally within Amgen and to interact closely with the clinical development groups
Focus on leading a team to develop and execute a biomarker data analysis strategy that informs biochemical coverage, pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, and patient stratification/selection in support of the progression of Amgen's pipeline candidates from late preclinical development through all stages of clinical development
Direct and approve experimental designs, create and implement data analysis plans, interpret and communicate results as written reports and verbally to cross-functional teams
The core computational function of the group requires that we leverage and manipulate highly complex internal and external datasets, and we expect the candidate to have a deep understanding of cutting edge tools in statistics, machine learning and AI
A deep knowledge of assay qualification and IVD development is an important aspect of the group and the role, as the team interfaces closely with assay laboratories and the In-vitro Diagnostics group in the development of biomarker assays, companion and complementary diagnostics

Basic Qualifications
Doctorate degree and 4 years of scientific experience
OR
Master's degree and 7 years of scientific experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 9 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Genomics
Experience in analyzing clinical biomarker data
Knowledge and experience in clinical trial design
Experience in companion diagnostics development and knowledge of regulatory submission requirements of in vitro diagnostic devices in multiple markets
5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical industry
Hands-on experience in the fields of bioinformatics and genomics including working with various public and proprietary data repositories (e.g., TCGA, GTEx, dbGaP, Ensembl, UCSC genome browser, Array Studio), bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, GATK, Cell Ranger, samtools, VEP), and statistical environments (e.g., R, S+, Matlab)
Experience with manipulation, interpretation, and innovative analysis (e.g. novel algorithm development) of large biological datasets, including single-cell sequencing data
Proficient in programming (e.g., Python, Java, C/C++) and working in a Unix/Linux environment; ability to develop customized bioinformatics tools
Experience integrating data from multiple sources and identifying critical process variables
Experience establishing and reviewing complex plans for multiple projects or activities. This includes planning resource allocation and distribution and identifying contingency plans
