Job Details

The R&D Engineering Team is seeking an energetic, self-motivated and innovative individual for a position as Project Engineer. R&D Engineering supports AbbVie's investment in R&D facilities and infrastructure making a positive impact on the culture of "World Class" science, agility and innovation. The successful candidate shall possess the skills to successfully manage small projects by preparing RCEs, coordinating engineering design and executing project tasks and deliverables. The individual must be a collaborative team player and have a strong drive to deliver with excellence to customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and obtain approval for small to medium Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCE) to support R&D such as R&D Space Renovations/Upgrades, Scientific Services and Equipment replacement programs. Coordinates and monitors activities/projects. Reviews plans and monitors status of implementation for those assigned to project; makes judgments regarding quality of implementation within discipline; employs contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns when appropriate.
  • Uses established PM tools and techniques (FEP, Cash Flow Projections, Scope / Schedule Control, etc.) to stay within authorized budget limits and achieve the overall project and organizational objectives. Contributes to the development of project management best practices. Directs and manages Project Execution by performing the work defined in the project plan to achieve project objectives.
  • Monitors and controls project work to meet the performance objectives defined in the project plan. Focuses on cost and milestone achievement to optimize resource utilization. Reviews change requests, manages and approves changes to the deliverables, organizational process assets, project documents, and the project plan. Effectively coordinates internal and external engineering resources throughout the entire process of design and construction.
  • Provides SAP support to initiate shopping carts for items such as casework, construction contracts and equipment. Additionally, provides invoice resolution for the R&D Project team.
  • Collaborate with R&D Asset Services for equipment transfers and moves for all of Lake County R&D. Responsible for ensuring that building assets added in R&D projects are tagged, entered in Maximo and Preventive Maintenance is performed.
  • Seeks input from cross functional teams in resolving project hurdles. Resolves problems and crisis situations requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation by utilizing technical training and /or experience.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable policies and procedures.


  • A Bachelors Degree in Engineering, science or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 2+ years of significant engineering and/or project management experience.
  • Has demonstrated competency within a discipline.
  • Possesses a working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Ability to work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Demonstrates judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Listens to and understands others' points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one's own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment.
  • Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.
  • Has a technical background in health care, medical devices, pharmaceutical, biologics, or similar industries (preferred).
