AveXis, a Novartis company, is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, AveXis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

AveXis is seeking an EH&S Summer Intern that will support with the development and completion of specific EHS projects and programs at the Durham NC facility. The EH&S Intern will support design and development of employee and contractor EH&S training resources, review and document EH&S risk assessments within manufacturing/laboratory/or facility maintenance work areas, as well as support availability of chemical hazard communication information for all site personnel.


  • Create Visitor Pamphlet outlining EH&S information/guidelines for the site
  • Develop content (e.g. narration script, pictures, videos) for creation of a Contractor EH&S Orientation Training video.
  • Conduct and review Department-specific Job Safety Analyses and ensure they are accessible in the sitewide document management system.
  • Support safety reviews of new chemicals/materials and ensure Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available in the AveXis SDS database and availability of secondary container hazard labelling.


  • Enrolled in a 4-year degree program, or recently completed a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety or related field.
  • 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Must posses excellent Word, Excel, and interpersonal/communication skills

The level of this position will be based on the final candidate's qualifications.
