Summary:

The Bioinformatics Data Engineer assists in the establishment, configuration, and maintenance of development environments running on the Amazon Web Services cloud and on-premise computing platforms. Furthermore, the candidate provides programming (specifically R & Python, but may include others) and infrastructural support for other bioinformatics developers across varied scientific disciplines. The position also oversees the onboarding of developers, communication of best practices and generation of usage reports. The post holder works closely with Research IT, IT-Cloud Services, scientists, and third parties to create compute environments and centralize research data repositories geared towards research activities.

Responsibilities:

• This role requires strong familiarity with the Linux environment, including extensive scripting (such as shell, R, Python) experience, configuring software, as well as supporting pipelines.

• Provision and maintain data analytics platforms supporting our cutting-edge antibody discovery and production pipeline.

• Provision and administer AWS resources (EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, etc).

• Provide expertise in developing scientific applications and optimizing use of platform infrastructure

Write software infrastructure to support pipelines and workflows.

• Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot software applications.

• Evaluate and implement new infrastructural paradigms (e.g. AWS Batch/Kubernetes).

• Develop and maintain documentation and best practices for users of the scientific computing environment.

• Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations.

Requirements:

• Strong background in R, Python, and shell scripting

• Linux system administration

• AWS cloud deployment experience

• Familiarity with database management systems such as MySQL, MongoDB, Oracle, PostgreSQL

• Experience with high performance and cloud based computing

• Familiar with code version control systems such as git, subversion, CVS

• Experience in scalable cloud-based platform architecture design

• Code debugging, profiling and optimization techniques

Preferred Skills:

• Effective communication of complex concepts to collaborators with wide range of expertise.

• Web server administration

• Willingness to work in and adapt to a fast paced, changing environment

Preferred Background:

• Experience with molecular biology and genomics

• MS in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related disciplines + 1 year experience

• BS in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related disciplines + 3 years experience

• 2+ years of AWS DevOps experience

• AWS Associate certification

• Previous experience in an industrial setting
