Elanco Research and External Innovation is pursuing the discovery and pre-clinical evaluation of new therapeutic approaches for chronic diseases in companion animals. The incumbent in this role will be responsible for identifying, validating and progressing targets of interest in Elanco's key therapeutic areas in internal medicine, orthopedics, dermatology, inflammatory, and immunological diseases. This position provides an opportunity to be part of highly engaged teams that include experts in chemistry, biopharmaceuticals, ADME, and toxicology, working together to advance companion animal therapeutic drug candidates towards entry into the development phase of R&D. The individual in this role is expected to provide project and scientific leadership to provide innovative solutions, a positive and motivating work environment, ultimately delivering Elanco's research pipeline.

In this role, the incumbent serves as a Research Project Leader responsible for the efficient and timely progression of novel companion animal therapeutics using scientific expertise in veterinary physiology. The research project leader will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members to ensure that projects have strong scientific merit and project plans incorporate strategies to identify and reduce risk to ensure early go / no go decision making. In addition, the incumbent in this role will be the key leader responsible for designing and overseeing proof-of-concept effectiveness studies. The incumbent will collaborate with internal clinical sites and contract research organizations for the conduct of these studies, coordinate with internal functions and ensure work is conducted to appropriate standards while meeting rigorous technical and timeline requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and grow expertise in key therapeutic areas, leverage expertise to deliver innovative solutions for unmet clinical needs in companion animals
  • Leverage expertise in model development and target animal Proof-of-Concept (POC) effectiveness studies to advance projects toward development decisions
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key external partners and key opinion leaders.
  • Strong emphasis on working relationships with Elanco Research Laboratory team members on internal ideation/innovation and with External Innovators on evaluation of external opportunities
  • As project leader, ensure all key subject matter experts and stakeholders are identified and engaged to move the project from generation to entry into development; ensure technical requirements and project milestone documentation are complete; represent the project and the team at governance milestone reviews; work closely with project management to ensure accurate project plans and budget forecasts to ensure project delivery in a high quality, timely, cost-effective manner
  • Create a positive work environment that is aligned with company objectives
  • Collaborate with R&D partner teams to ensure efficient progression and transition of projects to development
  • Evaluate new technologies and new drug candidates in order to fuel the research pipeline with high quality assets.

Basic Qualifications
DVM/PhD, or PhD with at least 6 years of translational research experience, or DVM/MS with at least 6 years drug development experience.

Additional Skills/Preferences
  • High degree of learning agility and ability to contribute to the broad range of therapeutic areas
  • Strong history of contributions to translational science with good understanding of basic research and clinical applications
  • Proven track record of clinical or pre-clinical research in a collaborative environment
  • Experience using disease pathophysiology to drive hypothesis driven research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with external partners
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple complex projects
  • Must have working knowledge/experience in some portion of the following and a willingness to engage in these areas: Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Immunology, Pain & Inflammation, and Dermatology.
  • Board certification in a veterinary specialty, Animal health pharmaceutical R&D experience, clinical experience with companion animals.
