The Automation Engineer reports to the Manager of the Automation group. The position is responsible for providing Automation Engineering support at the Amgen Thousand Oaks site.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide system administration and ownership support for DeltaV and Utility systems. Support includes:
    • Infrastructure and networking architecture
    • Migration planning and execution
    • User Access
    • Patching, Security and Compliance
    • Overall system and hardware reliability
    • End-User interface
  • Work closely with multiple disciplines including: OIS network and site platform leads to support, plan and execute system roadmaps and as well as influence future improvements.
  • Ensure optimal performance and reliability for process systems and equipment.
  • Work closely with multiple disciplines, including manufacturing, process engineering, process development, utility operations, maintenance, quality assurance, and validation to implement operational improvements.
  • Provide technical support to commercial and clinical manufacturing as needed, specific to process control and automation infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment, automation or process issues in the field.
  • Develop, organize, analyze, and present results for operational issues and projects of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Communicate proactively with supervisor and support staff, highlighting issues and proposing solutions.
  • System owner responsibilities such as change control, maintenance, backup/restore and disaster recovery.
  • Responsible to provide On-Call support coverage nights and weekends, on a rotating basis.


Basic Qualifications

Master's Degree

OR

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of Engineering experience

OR

Associate's degree and 6 years of Engineering experience

OR

High school diploma/GED and 8 years of Engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering or Advanced degree.
  • 1+ years of experience in troubleshooting and designing of DeltaV DCS systems.
  • 3+ years of experience working on Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley PLCs (Factory Talk & ControlLogix), and/or ABB DCS.
  • Project engineering skills over and above the technical skills.
  • Excellent people, team, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Experienced in process control engineering and troubleshooting with bioreactors, ultrafiltration/diafiltration systems, HVAC and/or Utility systems.
  • Experience with Process Design, Commissioning and change control methodology. Direct experience with regulated environments including detailed understanding of cGMPs.
  • Ability to update and read P&IDs, instrumentation and electrical design packages including SDS, HDS, URS, IQ, OQ, VP and VSR among other engineering and validation documentation. Develop of detailed specification, engineering documents, SOP and operating standards.
  • Able to support manufacturing operations through effective troubleshooting and ensuring automated equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Knowledge of OSI PI Historian, Mitsubishi PLC, ABB Robotics and programming languages such as VBA.
  • Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Medical Device, FDA industry experience with cGMP regulations.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment
  • Strong focus on safety.
  • Some documentation and computer system validation experience.
  • Automation / Controls engineering experience in a system integrator environment.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction.
  • Direct hands on experience with lifecycle management of control systems hardware and software infrastructure.
  • Work with manufacturing, process development, utilities, facilities, quality assurance and validation departments in developing requirements and recommendations for large and/or highly complex system/facility modifications.
  • Understanding of Operational Excellence and Lean Transformation in the Automation and Engineering Context.
