Job Description

The Corporate Strategy Office (CSO) drives major strategic initiatives for the company. The group works closely with the Finance, R&D and Commercial groups to assess acquisition, partnership and venture capital investment opportunities and to address strategic questions related to AbbVie's geographic and therapeutic footprint, incorporating both a scientific and a commercial point of view.

  • The primary goal of AbbVie's Strategy Leadership Program (SLP) is to recruit high performing individuals who have demonstrated an interest and expertise in the biopharma industry as well as a strong desire to deepen their understanding, and to apply an apprenticeship model to train them as future AbbVie leaders within CSO or the broader enterprise
  • To support this objective, CSO will provide high profile, high impact development experiences in: Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Alliance Management and Ventures. Participants will typically rotate through each of the CSO function, but there will be flexibility to make modifications based on the interests and background of SLP candidates as well as CSO business needs
  • During these rotations, SLP participants will build cross-functional leadership capabilities and collaboration skills by supporting the delivery of high priority projects and initiatives
  • As part of CSO's commitment to experiential learning, participants in the program will:
    • Shadow and support deal teams during active negotiations
    • Participate in other external engagement activities (e.g. partnership discussions, board meetings)
    • Attend industry conferences and other training opportunities
    • Join presentations with AbbVie senior leadership
  • Example projects may include the following:
    • Perform primary research and market analysis to characterize industry trends, develop cross-functional strategy, and identify potential investment opportunities
    • Review potential investment opportunities for scientific, commercial and financial viability, and lead the assessment and due diligence activities
    • Develop effective deal structure, risk mitigation and negotiating strategies for a target opportunity, ensuring alignment with AbbVie objectives and functional management
    • Actively review, monitor, and support the management of AbbVie's portfolio companies by keeping abreast of developments within the companies via press coverage and exposure to portfolio company management and board of directors
    • Communicate and network with potential external parties to ensure awareness of AbbVie key capabilities and Business Development objectives, deliver oral and written presentations to senior management to seek approval for new opportunities
    • Support the tracking and execution of AbbVie's long-range plan as part of the broader LRP process


Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or have completed an advanced degree in the life sciences (i.e. PhD, PharmD, MD)
  • Interest in life science, healthcare, M&A, and licensing transactions through course work or prior professional experience
  • Industry, consulting, investment banking experience preferred, but not required
  • Strong, general leadership and project management skills including proven problem solving, diplomacy, conflict and risk management skills
  • Collaborative team member, effective at moving cross-functional priorities forward and in engaging constructively with external and internal partners across a range of disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to make logical and timely decisions based on past experiences
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PPT)
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship
