Amgen is seeking a Specialist IS Software Engineer to build leading edge scientific applications with modern technology stacks that will be used by scientists to drive Amgen's innovation in drug discovery. The talented candidate will join our Research & Medical Informatics (R & MI) organization to deliver solutions by using best practices in Agile and DevOps. This position can be based at one of Amgen's Research sites: Thousand Oaks - CA, South San Francisco - CA, Burnaby - Canada, Cambridge - MA and Tampa - FL.

The R & MI team supports Discovery & Early Development functions globally with innovative IS and Data Science solutions to accelerate and grow Amgen's pipeline of biopharmaceuticals. Our success in informatics is driven by our commitment to our vision -

The primary responsibilities of this role are:
  • Design, develop and implement IS solutions to enable end to end Informatics solutions in support of Research activities to discover lead drug molecules
  • Serve as lead Solution Engineer: Lead in-house solution development by identifying and utilizing cutting-edge technologies in the industry to meet scientific business needs
  • Partner with Research functional areas and lead discussions to identify scientific needs to improve drug discovery informatics platforms
  • Ensure effective communication between scientific area management, technical staff and vendors to analyze scientific needs and implement data acquisition, integration and analysis systems
  • Provide technical support & training platforms for Amgen's drug discovery Research software application platform
  • Lead vendor and external business partners relationships


Basic Qualification
  • Doctorate Degree
  • Master's degree in Life Sciences/engineering and 3 years of Information Systems experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of Information Systems experience OR
  • Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience OR
  • High school diploma/GED AND 12 years of Information Systems experience
  • Demonstrated track record of designing and delivering innovative IS solutions
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and technical expertise to be able to communicate effectively with business and technology partners.
  • Self-motivated individual with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life/Physical Sciences, Computer Science or Engineering
  • Expertise in Software Engineering and Design
  • Full stack development using infrastructure cloud services (AWS Preferred) and cloud-native tools and design patterns (Containers, Serverless, Docker, etc.)
  • Proficiency in software development languages including but not limited to Java and C#
  • Experience in the Bio-Pharmaceutical industry focusing on software development
  • Strong experience working with agile methodology & DevOps frameworks (CI/CD, Docker, Jenkins, JIRA, GitLab, Maven, Sonar Cube, Airflow) with successful experience working in a collaborative team environment
  • Strong data analysis and reporting experience by using analytics, visualization and database technologies (Oracle, PL SQL, Redshift, Databricks, Spotfire, Tableau, Python - NumPy, SciPy, Pandas)
  • Experience in AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift, S3, Lambda & HPC (high performance computing) environments
  • Demonstrated strong front-end development skills using JavaScript frameworks (Jquery, AngularJS, ReactJS, ExtJS, D3) through object-oriented design patterns and object-oriented CSS
  • Expertise in translating business requirements to technical requirements and recommend solutions
  • Knowledge of or experience in Life, Physical or Computational Sciences
  • 3+ years of experience in agile software methodology
