Drug Product Development is responsible for understanding the biopharmaceutical properties of candidate molecules for translation into the design and manufacture of patient centric dosing regimens. We have a challenging opportunity for a Senior Scientist based in the Biopharmaceutics and Drug Absorption group in North Chicago, IL

AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative scientist with a proven track record in characterizing the absorption behavior of small-molecule drug candidates to achieve the design of formulations that meet required in vivo performance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration with preclinical formulation scientists to design and execute experiments that characterize the biopharmaceutical properties of small molecule candidates
  • Collaboration with preclinical scientists to understand and model the impact of small molecule biopharmaceutical properties on oral drug absorption
  • Provision of in vitro drug release data to formulation scientists to elucidate the impact of formulation variables and drug release on in vivo performance
  • Interface with project teams to ensure that biopharmaceutics considerations are incorporated into the optimization of the drug-like properties of small molecule candidates.

Interface to project teams to ensure biopharmaceutics considerations are incorporated into the design of preclinical and clinical formulation s

Basic:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Pharmacy Biopharmaceutical Sciences, or Medicinal Chemistry and typically 10 years of experience
  • OR Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Pharmacy Biopharmaceutical Sciences, or Medicinal Chemistry and typically 8 years of experience
  • OR PhD in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Pharmacy Biopharmaceutical Sciences, or Medicinal Chemistry and no experience necessary.

Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of the physiological barriers to intestinal absorption of small molecules, including various potential transport and metabolism pathways.
  • Strong knowledge in the characterization of the biopharmaceutical properties of small molecules
  • Working knowledge of typical formulation approaches and routes of administration (i.e. IV, SC, IP, PO) across multiple species.
  • Experience in the development of in vitro drug release methods to model in vivo performance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a crossfunctional team setting.

Key AbbVie Competencies:

  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of the team to enable higher performance.
  • Learns fast, grasps the "essence" and can change the course quickly where indicated.
  • Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
  • Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
  • Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality.
