Amgen is seeking a Specialist Information Systems (IS) UNIX Engineer to join the Infrastructure Operations team and support with accountability for all UNIX engineering related activities while managing various toolsets for Operating System Administration, Performance, Reporting, and monitoring needs in a 24x7 regulated environment. The incumbent will design, and then implement enterprise UNIX server solutions that meet business requirements that are in line with defined strategies, compliance requirements, and fiscal guidelines. The Specialist IS Engineer will serve at a subject matter expert (SME) level, and will work with Linux, Solaris, and other new UNIX related technologies introduced into the Amgen environment.

The Specialist IS Engineer will report to the Senior Manager Information Systems based at Amgen's Capability Center in Tampa, FL. At Amgen, our mission is simple: to serve patients. The Infrastructure Operations team is the global enterprise administration group that manages physical and virtual hosting including private and public cloud hosting options, operating systems, databases, middleware, storage, and backup. The primary UNIX platform supported by this group is Linux with a smaller footprint of Solaris Operating System.

Key activities for the Specialist Information Systems UNIX Engineer:
  • Supports the Service Owner, full time employees, and managed service provider in the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of the technology service
  • Ensures service is aligned with the key principles of service ownership which includes: meeting the needs of the business, cost effectiveness, scalability, compliance, reliability, and resilience
  • Manages and administers UNIX Systems, and related services and monitoring systems
  • Contributes to the development of the architecture roadmap for Linux and Solaris and develop technical standards and policies
  • Leads projects from a technical aspect and provide guidance and direction to less experienced technical staff and Managed Service Providers including installations and upgrades of Operating System, backup/recovery strategies, and high availability configurations
  • Monitors security bulletins to obtain information of potential threats; analyze and lead necessary security patch implementations to ensure ongoing system security
  • Implements server automation solutions and enterprise-wide scripts using tools such as Ansible
  • Provides performance analysis and tune systems while utilizing software and hardware tools to identify, analyze, and diagnose complex problems and factors affecting performance
  • Investigates and resolve server related technical issues providing rotational 24x7 On-Call Support at the SME level and assist/lead Root Cause Analysis reviews
  • Accountable for all audit and security compliance issues (Amgen and government regulations) related to Unix platforms

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree


Master's degree and 2 years of Information Systems and UNIX admin experience


Bachelor's degree and 4 years of Information Systems and UNIX admin experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems and UNIX admin experience


High school diploma/GED and 12 years of Information Systems and UNIX admin experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Industry Certifications and experience with Linux, and clustering systems including Veritas etc.
  • Scripting and ITIL experience and managing regulated systems in Pharma sector
  • Strong understanding of operating system and network tools for troubleshooting performance issues
  • Strong working knowledge on NAS/SAN storage, Clustering and HA configurations
  • Knowledge of Automation Scripting in Ansible, Chef, or Puppet
  • Excellent data-driven problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proven experience as part of a high performance team skilled in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues
  • Previous demonstrated experience mentoring less experienced UNIX Administrators
