AbbVie is seeking a talented and motivated Senior Scientist to join the Discovery Platform Technologies (DPT) group within the Drug Discovery organization in Lake County, IL. DPT is an interdisciplinary organization focused on discovering, implementing and applying new technology solutions to provide disease-relevant biological insight. Expertise in mass spectrometry and in developing/implementing new chromatographic and non-chromatographic high-throughput analytical techniques to address biologically relevant questions is strongly desired. A proven record of developing new analytical technology, knowledge in the biological sciences, and exposure to other bioanalytical methods is a plus. The professional in this position will work in cross-functional teams to develop novel methods and techniques to address analytical challenges associated with the measurement of molecules in complex biological systems, with emphasis on improved cycle times. Candidates must have the ability to conduct independent research, solve scientific problems, and lead technical initiatives in a highly collaborative environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate, maintain, and develop qualitative and quantitative LC-MS/MS methods on high-end mass spectrometers
  • Develop robust, custom multiplexed HPLC-MS assays to support therapeutic areas and to elucidate project biology.
  • Broaden MS-based target screening capabilities by implementing HT phenotypic screens with multiplexed molecular readouts.
  • Enhance understanding of Disease Biology: Develop next-generation PD & molecular readouts to interrogate biology & inform chemistry.
  • Implement next generation MS microanalysis and microsampling methods.
  • Process, interpret, and visualize data to facilitate project team decisions
  • Prepare written summaries of experimental results and verbally present in team meetings
  • Scout, develop and apply next-gen technology solutions to address unique AbbVie needs
  • Present and publish work in high level journals and conferences


Level and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Basic:

  • PhD, MS, or BS in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or closely related field with 0+years (PhD); 8+ years (MS); or 10+ years (BS) of relevant experience
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot a variety of hardware/software platforms
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting, operating and maintaining UPLCs and mass spectrometry systems.
  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers
  • Can-do attitude/team-oriented/open to tackle new challenges
  • Strong work ethic and scientific integrity
  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem-solving, strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to successfully work independently and as part of teams
  • Motivation to lead new opportunities through collaborations, partnerships and translate them into internal success.

Preferred:

  • Postdoctoral and/or pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Experience with Sciex, Thermo and Agilent UPLC and MS systems.
  • Experience with instrument maintenance, design, programming and laboratory automation.
  • Fundamental knowledge in biology, specifically relating to disease biology, and the desire to expand biological expertise through analytical measurements.
  • Experience in developing or applying High throughput MS technology.
