The Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a highly motivated and capable Sr Associate to join the Discovery Technologies department at our Research and Development facility in Thousand Oaks CA (ATO). The successful candidate will be a bench scientist that contributes hands-on to our assay screening efforts in support of Amgen's small molecule drug discovery pipeline in collaboration with multiple therapeutic areas. The position focuses on the implementation & execution of established in vitro biochemical and cell-based screening assays to support HTS and SAR studies for promising therapeutic targets.

Position responsibilities include:

Implement and scale assays from medium to high throughput (384 &/or 1536) screening applications

Perform small molecule screening, design assay workflows, data analysis & data reporting is as necessary

Work with liquid handling instrumentation (e.g., Echo, Bravo, Tempest, FRD, BioRAPTR, BottleValve, Washer-Dispenser II or similar) and detection instrumentation (e.g., Envision, ViewLux, High Content reader, FLIPR, MSD, or similar)

Learn, apply and incorporate automation workflows (scheduling software, protocol design, or other programming knowledge) and operating integrated robotics towards productive execution of routine screening assays

Maintain fluency with the latest lab automation and screening assay technologies, scientific literature surrounding drug targets and be an active contributor to the interpretation of results in group discussions

Exhibit excellent teamwork and communication as this role requires an ability to work closely with other scientists in the group and across Amgen

Adhere to good laboratory conduct, documentation practices, and safety guidelines

Basic Qualifications

Master's degree

OR

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

A Master's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field

1+ years of research experience in a drug discovery laboratory setting working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Prior experience executing enzyme or cell-based screening assays in (384 and/or 1536) plate format

Experience with operating, implementing, and troubleshooting liquid handling equipment

Cell culture expertise (immortalized and/or primary cells)

A flexible mindset, with strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills

Successfully demonstrated initiative, teamwork, collaboration, an ability to multi-task, and a passion for delivering results from routine assay execution and screening

Ability to create and establish priorities, manage work plans, and meet timelines

Capacity to identify, evaluate, implement, and become proficient in novel laboratory techniques

Familiarity in the understanding and implementation of a wide range of biochemical and cell-based screening assays and readouts (e.g., TR-FRET, HTRF, BRET, Alpha Screen, Fluorescence Polarization, High Content imaging, Luminescence & Fluorescence-based reporter &/or label-free assays) supporting drug discovery on novel therapeutic targets

A fast learner and critical thinker, with demonstrated capabilities in routine screening assay design, implementation, and execution, data analysis, and operation of laboratory automation

Experience in setting-up & operation of fluorescence/luminescence plate readers (e.g., FLIPR, Envision) and automated liquid handlers (e.g., Bravo, Echo, Tempest) across executing 384- &/or 1536-well microtiter plate screening assays

Familiarity with automation or integration workflow software programming and statistical platforms for the analysis of large datasets (e.g., Screener, Spotfire, Pipeline Pilot)
