We are looking for a Supervisor for our Animal Research Facility. This person supervises the laboratory animal facility providing oversight of daily operations and maintains the Vivarium to inspection-ready condition at all times. Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Ensures staffing levels are appropriate to ensure proper care and compliance with department Standard Operating Procedures and policies.

• Advises workers regarding requirements for compliance with safety, and state and federal guidelines for operation of research facility.

• Oversees the animal care facility by providing work direction to Sr.Animal Care Technicians and Animal Care Technicians

• Provides input with respect to hiring personnel and performance evaluations.

• Provides managerial support for Animal Facility Manager during absences.

• Orders animals and equipment as required within signing authority level.

• Monitors care and health of animals.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Arranges purchase of items, such as animal feed, bedding, and supplies.

• Plans, schedules and assigns work to ensure efficient utilization of manpower, equipment and facilities. Reassigns team to other assignments based on staffing needs. Verifies time for FTE reporting and pay purposes.

• Instructs workers regarding procedures, such as feeding and cleaning schedules and documentation.

• Reviews work of personnel to determine established procedures are followed and to verify accuracy of documentation.

• Maintains accurate records and inventories related to supplies, equipment, and receipt and assignment of animals.

• Conducts inspections of animal facilities to ensure the maintenance of required sanitation standards; observe and report noticeable or unusual changes in animals.

• Oversees maintenance of the equipment within the research animal facility

• Works with Manager to provide training programs for animal husbandry staff. Ensures checklist of procedures for new hires completed and follow-up to ensure completion of missing items.

• Collaborates on the development of animal care facilities processes and policies.

• Writes initial performance evaluations for assigned staff. Provides input into hiring, termination and disciplinary actions for team.

• Assists the Animal Facilities Manager, in such duties as may be assigned or delegated and assume the duties and responsibilities of the Manager in his/her absence.

• Maintains facility documentation and tracking reports as necessary


• Bachelor of Science degree in the biological sciences or veterinary technology is preferred.

• A minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience in laboratory animal science and technology required.

• AALAS certification at the LAT level is required.

• Pursuit of the CMAR certification by AALAS is desirable.

• Knowledge of applicable regulations regarding the proper standards of animal care and use in a research environment, esp. substantial understanding of "The Guide".

• Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and advanced computer skills, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro)

• Manages, directs and leads assigned staff
