Job Details

The Regeneron Genetics Center (RGC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company, whose goals are to apply large scale human genetics to identify new drug targets and to guide the development of therapeutics programs and precision medicine. Building upon Regeneron's strengths in mouse genetics and genetics-driven drug discovery and development, the RGC specializes in ultra-high-throughput exome sequencing, large scale informatics and data analysis encompassing genomics and electronic health records, and translating genetic discoveries into new biology and drug discovery opportunities. The RGC leverages multiple approaches including large population based studies, Mendelian genetics and family based studies, founder population genetics, and large-scale disease focused projects and has developed a network of over 50 collaborations with research organizations around the world. Including some of the largest sequencing studies in the world, such as the DiscovEHR study in collaboration with Geisinger Health System, and an initiative to sequence 500,000 participants with the UK Biobank, the RGC has built one of the largest human genetics databases, including sequence data from over several hundred thousand participants and rapidly growing. Our interests encompass a breadth of different areas across all therapeutic areas and the RGC is highly integrated into all facets of research and development at Regeneron. Program goals include target discovery, indication discovery, and patient-disease stratification. Objectives include advancing basic science around the world through public sharing of discoveries, providing clinically-valuable insights to physicians and providers of collaborating health-care systems, improving patient outcomes, and identifying novel targets for drug development.

Summary

To lead and organize the analyses of electronic health data on millions of individuals, with the goal of generating the knowledge that will enable Regeneron to identify and understand therapeutic opportunities. Within this context the candidate will guide Regeneron in the use of large scale datasets to:

• Understand relationships between disease and biomarkers (or other early stage predictors)

• Characterize the development and evolution of disease in different groups of patients

• Explore cost effectiveness and benefits of current and future therapeutic strategies, and

• Ultimately to deliver better medicines to the patients who need them by identifying unmet medical needs and therapeutic opportunities, among others.

The candidate will provide leadership and direction to teams that combine expertise in genomics, biology, computation and medicine and which seek to use large scale electronic health data to answer epidemiologic questions. Provide leadership in the design and refinement of the analytical approaches and tools that will enable analyses of electronic health data to be deployed across broad research domains, ranging from cardiovascular disease to neurology to immunology to cancer. The candidate will help us use epidemiological data to guide drug target nominations, indication discovery, clinical development and patient stratification, and complement existing approaches to these problems that are based on genetic data.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrated ability to build, organize and lead teams of investigators executing cutting edge analyses using electronic health datasets (such as those collected by insurers and health care providers in the course of clinical care or emerging datasets collected using mobile devices and related technologies).

• The candidate will be expected to work with a diverse team of investigators to refine analysis questions and design specific strategies to address them. This will involved designing analysis methodologies but also refining phenotype and covariate definitions and identifying appropriate datasets in which to answer each question.

• Expertise in strategies and approaches that help derive sound epidemiologic inference from observational datasets. The candidate will be expected to have experience in the use of propensity scores and other approaches for generating well matched groups of subjects to enable sound inference from these large datasets.

• Broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities at all stages of analyses using electronic health record data. This should include demonstrated experience in the design and execution of large scale analyses but also on data integration of analysis results across large scale resources, and in quality control, interpretation and validation of results.

• An outstanding candidate will have demonstrated leadership in the use of electronic health records and potentially mobile health data to characterize the effectiveness of different treatments, the value of specific biomarkers, and/or the life course of disease.

• The candidate will be expected to build and lead a team of scientists with expertise in epidemiological data analysis and interpretation. As such, demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and guidance to more junior colleagues and help them develop their full potential and build new skills and abilities is highly valuable. The outstanding candidate will be able help teams of skilled individuals to consistently achieve high levels of motivation, enthusiasm and performance.

• Expertise with modern computing environments is a plus, given the scale of the data to be analyzed and the potential value of computational intensive methods for matching, missing data imputation, .

• Although expertise in genetics and genetic epidemiology, familiarity with genomic data and particularly Mendelian randomization approaches is a plus, as it will facilitate interactions with the rest of our team - many of whom interact with genetic association datasets and results daily.

• Critically review and provide feedback on analyses plans, results and summaries to ensure they are accurate and reliable. Identify potential problems and propose remedies or refinements.

• Outstanding communication skills and an ability to summarize and present the results of epidemiological studies to a variety of technical audiences, ranging from experts in in biology, drug design and medicine to experts in genetics, biostatistics and epidemiology.

• Ability to work in a highly interactive environment with a diverse team of colleagues.

Requirements

• A track record of building, organizing and leading teams with diverse skills and focused on deriving high quality epidemiological inference from electronic health record databases and other large scale data sources. A record of mentoring and developing talent.

• Knowledge of epidemiologic analyses and approaches, including quality control options for electronic health record data, approaches for matching, handling missing data, and weighing observations.

Leadership in the development and creative application of epidemiologic methods to the analysis of electronic health record datasets to answer questions about disease etiology.

• Expertise with the organization of large scale multi-site experiments and in the design and execution of analysis that combine data from multiple relevant sources.

• Ability to summarize and distill results concisely. Excellent oral presentation and writing skills.

• Either a Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Clinical Informatics or in a related field or an M.D. and substantial demonstrated research experience is expected.

• Minimum Years of Experience: 7-10 years of experience post PhD expected.

This is an opportunity to join our select team that is already leading the way in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry. Apply today and learn more about Regeneron's unwavering commitment to combining good science & good business.
