The Opportunity

BioCurate is seeking an experienced Senior Project Leader who will, together with the Executive and Project Leadership Team, lead the development of the BioCurate portfolio, from initial investigator interaction through oversight and delivery of specific project milestones. The BioCurate portfolio comprises projects sourced from its University researchers and those emanating from the national, recently launched Biomedical Translation Bridge (BTB) program

Success as a Senior Project Leader will be driven through international pre-clinical ‘hands-on’ drug development experience, scientific expertise, personal initiative and excellent academic and CRO interactions that will enable the development and management of a drug development project plan.

The Senior Project Leader will have industry experience in managing new drug and therapeutic discovery and development activities, including responsibility for key relationship management and initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and completion of projects. The incumbent shall have experience in the discovery and development of small molecules, and/or biologics and/or cell/gene therapies, preferably across a range of disease areas.

The Role

The core responsibilities will be:

  • To mentor researchers and to curate, review, manage and report projects sourced from academic, commercial or other interactions to project decision points

  • To lead and coordinate input from multiple partners internal and external to BioCurate

  • To ensure delivery of agreed activities with project investigators, consultants and CROs and in accordance with the stated budget and timeframes, and

  • To build highly effective relationships with researchers, key university staff, industry and others in the broader sector.

The Senior Project Leader will work together with the Executive and Project Leadership Team, to manage the development of the BioCurate portfolio, from initial investigator interaction through oversight and delivery of specific project milestones.  In addition, this same group will work closely with BioCurate’s BTB partners to select successful research ventures and then mentor and manage projects to reach the proof-of-concept stage with potential to attract further capital and support.

To be successful

Success as a Senior Project Leader will be:

  • The identification and development of projects and research ventures that aim to ultimately result in preventative interventions, cures and treatments for important diseases and

  • Contributing to the mentoring of researchers from academia and small/medium sized enterprises (SME) to improve Australia’s capability in translation and the early commercialisation process for human health discoveries. 

Achievement of these goals will require the Senior Project Leader to have high level interpersonal and communication skills, personal initiative, international pre-clinical drug/biologic development experience, proven project management skills, scientific credibility, relevant industry experience (i.e. therapeutic development) and be able to work highly collaboratively as part of a team.

About the Biomedical Translation Bridge (BTB) program

The Biomedical Translation Bridge (BTB) Program is an initiative of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), providing up to $1 million in matching funding to nurture the translation of new therapies, technologies and medical devices through to the proof of concept stage.

The BTB program is operated by MTPConnect in partnership with BioCurate, UniQuest (the commercialisation company of the University of Queensland), the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP, led by Flinders University), and the Bridge and BridgeTech programs (Queensland University of Technology); all pre-eminent organisations engaged in the translation and commercialisation of health and medical research.

BioCurate and UniQuest will work closely together as Venture Partners with specific responsibility for drug therapeutic projects. This collaborative, national approach will bring unique value to BTB projects by leveraging the complementary expertise and decades of international industry experience that each group can provide.
