As a leader within the Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS) organization, the Director of GSS, Strategy will be responsible to develop a team and process which will serve to enable the development of category strategies. This leader will report to the Executive Director of GSS supporting the Amgen Operations and R&D functions and will directly manage a team of two Sr. Managers and a matrixed team of subject matter experts. In this capacity, the leader will be responsible for delivering a robust category strategy process which will enable the broader organization, responsible for approximately $3Billion in spend, to successfully engage stakeholders to define 3 to 5-year sourcing and supplier engagement plans.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and embed a fit for purpose category strategy framework that encompasses supply market insights, current and forecasted business needs, sourcing analysis, strategic option development and value realization plans.
  • Provide expert advice and facilitate Global Category Managers and their stakeholders through the strategy creation process to ensure timely and effective outcomes
  • Effectively leverage team members and subject matter experts to provide data and insights to support the category strategy development process.
  • Engage teams to work according to the Agile methodology to deliver strategies efficiently and effectively
  • Champion a three-year pipeline of savings and value plans in alignment with category and business strategies to deliver sustainable productivity
  • Maintain expert knowledge on strategy development processes through peer benchmarking, attendance in industry events, leveraging market intelligence and engaging consultants as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in our sourcing processes, tools and operating model.
  • Serve as a thought partner to Directors of GSS and actively challenge work to deploy the most comprehensive and creative solutions; remove barriers for team
  • Create an environment where cross functional teams can explore "unconstrained possibilities" in the strategy development process
  • Drive alignment between category strategy and the needs and requirements of regions, countries, and sites


Preferred Capabilities and Experience
  • Compelling and persuasive communicator (oral and written) with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong Sourcing/Procurement experience leading global categories and developing structured strategies with stakeholders
  • Ability to strengthen relationships with key customers and to champion change
  • Ability to quickly build knowledge of the market forces shaping a customer's/category business context (e.g. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and utilizing full set of sourcing levers to drive value for customers
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present insights based on the needs of the audience
  • Ability to develop business cases and champion opportunities with quantifiable financial benefits Diverse Global Sourcing/Procurement experience within and/or external to the Pharma industry
  • Managerial courage to provide performance feedback and to appropriately challenge teams in the context of idea generation
  • Provide support, mentorship and guidance to shape the category strategies across the organization
  • Experience in consulting or leading organization wide strategy creation outside of Sourcing will be considered
  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
  • Ability to lead teams in a matrix organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines
  • Change management experience with large and complex organizational transformations


Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience

OR

Master's degree and 8 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience

AND

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
