The Investigative Toxicology and Pathology (ITP) Group in Preclinical Safety (PCS) is responsible for collaborating with Discovery to select new targets/lead molecules through use of in vitro and in vivo studies, as well as supporting toxicity-associated issue resolution for development programs. We have a challenging opportunity for a motivated and experienced Scientist in North Chicago, IL.

AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated, innovative, experienced, and collaborative scientist to perform immunohistochemistry (optimization and routine), in situ hybridization, image analysis, immunofluorescence/confocal microscopy, and laser capture microdissection for discovery and development project support.


  • Interface with ITP pathologists and toxicologists, as well as PCS Discovery and Development project team members to aid in the identification of new drug candidates and issue resolution
  • Collaborate with and mentor preclinical scientists in the characterization of target organ toxicity and morphologic endpoint quantification
  • Conceive and execute novel and routine laboratory assays contributing to tissue localization of target and toxicity MOA determination in pre-clinical development
  • Level will be based on education & years of experience.

Qualifications (required):

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education with typically 12 years experience, or Master's degree or equivalent education with typically 10 years experience, or Ph.D. with typically 4 years experience.
  • Possesses thorough theoretical and practical understanding of immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and image analysis.
  • Working knowledge of routine histotechnology

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Strong experience in the use of commonly-used image analysis platforms (Genie, Halo, VisioPharm, etc.)
  • Pharmaceutical industry/biotechnology/toxicology experience
  • HT/HTL/QIHC (ASCP) certification
  • Working knowledge of immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, and/or laser capture microdissection
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional team setting
