RESPONSIBLITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for helping to define Kite's research strategies for our hematological cell therapy programs. This will include working with a team of motivated scientists and senior scientists to ensure completion of scientific and corporate goals associated with these programs. This individual will represent the team on various cross-functional and cross-site governance and strategy bodies. Additionally, the candidate will play a critical role in fostering the team-oriented and scientifically driven culture of Kite, specifically at the Emeryville location.

The successful candidate will have the following expertise:
  • Cellular and molecular biology
  • Adoptive cellular therapies
  • Cellular immunology
  • Cell engineering
  • Synthetic biology

This individual must enjoy motivating others and addressing challenges while retaining the scientific expertise and providing support to the scientific staff as well. Job requirements will include, and are not limited to, the following functions:

  • Provide strategic and technical, molecular immunology / T cell biology and molecular biology leadership and definition
  • Lead / contribute to the establishment of methods to characterize and understand the impact of cell engineering steps on the genome, biology and function of CART cell products
  • Lead teams to characterize cell therapy candidates based on phenotype and functionality to enable down-stream clinical development, with an emphasis on the safety and efficacy profile of the potential product
  • Contribute to the development and filing of investigational new drug submissions and those documents associated with the filing and preclinical development of multiple cell therapy products
  • Lead / contribute to relevant and impactful innovation programs internally and external collaborations to enhance CART characterization technologies and work-processes, aligned with emerging business drivers and Regulatory expectations
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, personal accountability and interpersonal skills, and capability for mentoring (direct reports and others)
  • Present data / strategy to scientists and management in internal and external venues (technical meetings, Project Team meetings, conferences) and publish in peer-reviewed journals, as appropriate
  • Maintain familiarity with the relevant current literature and its application to CART characterization and understanding


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD degree in Immunology / Molecular Biology with 7+ years of post-graduate experience in relevant roles in academia / industry, in the development of methods / tools for investigation and characterization of T cell genotype, phenotype and function
  • 5+ years managing, leading, building teams and organizations successfully to the fruition of the goals and objectives set forth for the company, the people in the company, and the patient
