We develop, manufacture, and deliver a portfolio of medical countermeasures for biological and chemical threats, existing and emerging infectious diseases as well as opioid overdose.

Summary Description of Role:

The Research Intern assists the scientific staff in carrying out research assignments involving a variety of laboratory methods, equipment and procedures. This position requires the understanding and application of diverse scientific methods and techniques. Troubleshooting is a key element to success in this position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

-Executes bench experiments carefully and precisely

-Makes detailed observations as experiments are conducted and reports data accurately and effectively

-Maintains complete and accurate records of all work done in the laboratory

-Performs a wide variety of tasks in the laboratory, including: maintaining adherent and suspension cell lines, DNA cloning (DNA preparations, ligation, PCR, and DNA digestion), maintenance of basic laboratory equipment and restocking lab supplies

-Monitors work to ensure quality

-Records inventory changes as supplies and reagents are used

-Presents and discusses results of experiments within department and project team

-Analyzes data and interprets results

-Prepares technical reports, summaries and protocols

-Works well in a team environment by being a productive team member, suggesting creative solutions to problems and providing input to project planning

-Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature

-Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement

-Trains others in areas of expertise

-Troubleshoots problems and institutes corrective action

-Makes suggestions to improve work processes and laboratory environment

-May participate in scientific conferences, present research in internal meetings, and contribute to scientific journals

Qualifications & Technical Skills:

-Basic understanding of cellular biology, molecular biology and virology

-Able to learn new skills quickly

-Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures, established techniques, instruments and equipment.

-Basic understanding of Universal Precautions and Basic Lab safety

-Expertise in molecular biology (cloning, Western Blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, etc...), cell culture (lentiviral vector preparation, transfection, infection assays), confocal microscopy, fluorescence activated cell sorting and histology.

-Able to repeat a procedure in the laboratory multiple times in exactly the same way

-Works well in a team environment

-Highly self-motivated, with excellent organizational skills and critical-thinking skills

-Capable of searching scientific literature to gain information about specific topics

-Skilled with use of word processing, spreadsheets, graphical and presentation software applications

-Ability to work with a high level of independence to design, troubleshoot, and execute experiments.

Education and Experience:

-High school degree and a minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a biology laboratory.
