The Protein Biochemistry organization, with staff located in Tarrytown, NY, provides biochemical and biophysical characterization of candidates in support of moving biotherapeutic drugs from late stage research through first-in-human studies. The director will manage a group within the protein biochemistry organization and be technically responsible for guiding and contributing to biophysical developability of lead candidates in research, development of analytical methods, and extended biochemical and biophysical characterization in support of IND filings. The candidate will also be responsible for managing the performance and career development of direct reports, serving on or leading cross-functional teams, writing and reviewing technical documents and regulatory submissions, developing analytical strategy, and communicating technical information to appropriate groups and management.

Essential Job Responsibilities

• Together with protein biochemistry senior leadership team, provides high-level vision and strategy related to biotherapeutic characterization to ensure group is meeting industry standards and trends, management's expectations, while bringing an understanding of regulatory expectations.

• Seeks and fosters existing and new collaborations with key cross-functional stakeholders that are aligned with senior management's expectations, and the group's responsibilities to support the drug development pipeline.

• Supervises and mentors a group with accountability for individual performance management (i.e., setting goals and expectations, conducting performance reviews).

• Ability to manage resources effectively to support the drug development pipeline with a focus on applying rigorous, high standards to the work, while consistently completing deliverables within program timelines and maximizing the potential impact of protein biochemistry deliverables on programs. Contributes to and reviews technical documents and regulatory documents.

• Guides technical development of biochemical and biophysical assays.

• Consistently provide clear written and verbal communication within protein biochemistry and with key cross-functional stakeholders. Participates and/or leads cross-functional development teams.

Other Job Responsibilities

• Guide characterization efforts to support initial toxicology studies.

• Guide efforts to maximize operational effectiveness of the laboratory including continuous improvement in work practices, procedures, and employ compliance when appropriate.

• Guide efforts to develop new cutting-edge technologies for improving efficiency or increasing depth of biochemical and biophysical characterization of biotherapeutic candidates.

• Assist in transfer of methods to Regeneron's quality control group, or other groups, and external partners, when appropriate.

• Ability to thoroughly analyze and understand methods, results, solves analytical problems, troubleshoots assays, and meets regulatory expectations for analytics.

• Maintains effective communication with groups within protein biochemistry, R&D, industrial operations and product supply, and regulatory.

• When appropriate and time permits, reviews and submits manuscripts for consideration for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

• Graduate degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent in biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, or related field with +10 years of progressive industrial experience is required.

• Excellent track record in supervising, mentoring, and developing direct and indirect reports with accountability for individual performance management is required.

• Experience leading and informing teams and management, drafting and reviewing technical documents, and supporting CMC regulatory filings are required.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment are required.

• High emotional intelligence is required.

• Strong scientific background in protein analysis with hands-on laboratory experience in the biochemical or biophysical characterization of proteins is required.

• Experience in developing analytical methods, characterizing proteins and other therapeutic modalities, and strong working knowledge of biochemical and biophysical characterization techniques are required.

• Hands-on laboratory experience with liquid chromatography (FPLC, HPLC, and UPLC), static and dynamic light scattering, capillary and gel-based electrophoresis, spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, CD, FTIR, Raman, DRS, SINS, SANS/SAXS), and in silico-based modeling are highly preferred.
