Job Details

You will join the growing tax counsel group responsible for analyzing, documenting and defending AbbVie's tax positions at the local, state and federal levels in the US and abroad. The tax counsel group analyzes the tax impact of AbbVie's continuously evolving operations, M&A activity, investments and collaborations; defends AbbVie's tax positions on audit; and recommends the appropriate tax treatment for various activities.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Represents Corporate Tax as a technical advisor on tax matters in cross-functional / cross-divisional projects. Possesses sufficient awareness of broader business, legal, treasury and accounting issues to be able to identify and pursue holistic, practical solutions that balance tax and business considerations. Possesses strong project management and people-leader skills to enable effective and efficient teaming and driving solutions through to successful implementation.
  • Represents Corporate Tax with outside advisors, financial auditors and tax authorities. With outside advisors, defines tax project objectives, manages outside advisors' activities and budgets, within the context of broader business project goals and parameters. Prepares timely, high quality responses to auditors and tax authorities, in coordination with Tax leaders. May negotiate and obtain resolutions with respect to disputed issues.
  • Serves as a technical resource for the Corporate Tax group, researching, analyzing, and documenting the support for a wide variety of tax and tax-impacted issues.
  • Monitors legislative, regulatory and administrative updates relevant to AbbVie and the broader biopharma industry. Disseminates updates to Tax and other stakeholders with helpful summaries to guide our actions. Identifies the impact to AbbVie and recommends potential planning opportunities.
  • Recommends solutions to the Senior Tax Counsel, and possibly to the Vice President, International Tax and/or the Vice President, Taxes. Given responsibility and latitude, subject to regular supervision by the Senior Tax Counsel.


Basic:
  • J.D. required, LL.M. and/or CPA are a plus.
  • 10+ years of tax experience, preferably with an emphasis on complex cross-border planning
  • Ideal candidate will have major law firm or Big Four experience, as well as experience from the corporate tax department of a Fortune 500 multinational company, including exposure to and responsibility for solving complex domestic and international tax problems.
  • This position requires strong research skills.
  • Candidate should be an excellent communicator, with clear and concise written and verbal communication skills to both tax-technical professionals and laypeople.
  • Accounting knowledge and ASC 740 familiarity is a plus.
