Job Details
Sourcing Specialists are experts and work with our Category Managers and drive the sourcing process of AbbVie to drive more value and be more efficient. They do this through building relationships with suppliers, Category Managers, creating data, and negotiate costs. This will all help to develop agreements that ultimately help a company grow and become more profitable.
The Sourcing Specialist plays a third party role, advising and consulting. They use data created by their role to make recommendations to upper-level staff members. They can work in a wide variety of industries and settings. Must be efficient in Microsoft Office and proficient in Excel. ClickView and Anaclitic tools a plus.
Sourcing Specialist Duties and Responsibilities
In order to facilitate an efficient sourcing process, a Sourcing Specialist performs many different tasks.
Build Relationships with Suppliers, Controller and Category Managers
In order to facilitate the sourcing process, the Sourcing Specialist forms relationships with important suppliers in the industry. It's important that Sourcing Specialists maintain relationships with their suppliers in order to ensure continual improvement in sourcing.
Negotiate Deals
Sourcing Specialists works in partnership to negotiate deals and contracts with suppliers. They negotiate pricing, quantity, and delivery schedules. Should anything change in the sourcing process, they're responsible for renegotiating new contracts as well.
Draft Analytics
The Sourcing Specialist then drafts detailed contracts to be reviewed by both their company and the supplier. They work in conjunction with legal counsel to include all of the details of their negotiation. Once the contract is complete they submit necessary paperwork and communicating contact deals with their company.
Understand Company's Commodities
In order to be an expert in the sourcing process for their company, the Sourcing Specialist must have an in-depth knowledge of their commodity industry. They have to understand the ins and outs of the commodity to know how to effectively source it, and they also have to have knowledge of all key players and suppliers in the industry.
Sourcing Specialist Skills
Sourcing Specialists are there to solve problems and increase efficiency, so they must be highly analytical and detail-oriented. In order to successfully negotiate, they also need to be excellent communicators who are persuasive and have great interpersonal skills. Juggling many tasks at once, they're great at prioritizing and highly organized.

- Bachelor's degree required
- Advise the business on driving specification/requirements
- Complete understanding and proven ability to create RFI's RFPs
- Proven ability to lead the business through the full sourcing process, vendor selection, contracting etc
- A solid understanding of the category market conditions, and supplier base
- Solve critical supply chain issues resulting from supplier performance variability to ensure on-going business continuity including; financial bankruptcy, material shortages, changes to specifications / statements of work, contractual breaches, delivery delays and plant disruptions.
- Maintain the understanding of a broad range of technical, legal, medical, regulatory and administrative issues affecting AbbVie including in order to develop sound strategies and policies to guide the purchasing organization.
- Obtain and maintain an in depth knowledge of brand positioning, market strategy, customer strategy (provider, patient, payor & Pharmacist), investment strategy, brand life cycle, regulatory rulings, compliance changes and industry trends.
