Amgen is searching for a Scientist based in Thousand Oaks on our Next Generation Automation team within Process Development. This group's mandate is to identify, design, develop, and implement novel manufacturing technologies into Amgen's worldwide multimodality clinical and commercial manufacturing network. This role is crucial for the success of Amgen Operations in its goal to ensure supply to our patients while driving a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and transformation.

A successful candidate will be able to work independently, taking responsibility of projects and self-managing their work packages with appropriate communication and escalation. A successful candidate will thrive in a cross-functional team environment, adeptly collaborating and liaising with partner organizations across Operations as well as in R&D, IS, Legal, and Business Development. Finally, a successful candidate will be driven to find or conceive novel techniques and approaches to solve relevant problems, thereby delivering value-adding and differentiating solutions for Amgen Process Development.

Specific responsibilities of the Scientist will include but are not limited to:
  • Designing, executing, analyzing, documenting, and presenting primary data packages related to new manufacturing and analytical technology development, with an emphasis on critically assessing the benefits and drawbacks of candidate technologies;
  • Applying scientific, engineering, and technical principles (e.g., transport phenomena, data science, first principles modeling, biophysics and biochemistry, programming, optics) to advance state-of-the-art process, automation, and analytics technologies;
  • Staying abreast of industry trends on modern manufacturing technologies, especially in the realms of process automation and artificial intelligence, and critically assessing external vendor proposals based on sound technical judgment and robust understanding of internal business needs;
  • Authoring and reviewing technical protocols and reports per good documentation practices;
  • Designing, prototyping, and critically assessing novel technologies in laboratory and pilot plant environments, following good laboratory practices, strictly adhering to safety and environmental standards, and proactively anticipating Quality and regulatory agency questions;
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in support of clinical and commercial manufacturing during the operationalization of new technologies, new product introductions, and manufacturability assessments;
  • Participating in cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvements in the Process Development organization as well as across the worldwide Amgen manufacturing network; and
  • As needed, traveling domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.


Basic qualifications:

Doctoral degree

OR

Master's degree & 3 years relevant experience

OR

Bachelor's degree & 6 years relevant experience

OR

Associate's degree & 8 years relevant experience

OR

High school diploma or GED certification & 10 years relevant experience

Preferred qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in engineering, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, or related discipline;
  • Experience with deep learning, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence;
  • Comfort with data science principles, coding, process automation, and statistical techniques, particularly design of experiments;
  • 3+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, or highly relevant academic experience;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to regularly and successfully interact with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and with a range of technical proficiencies;
  • The ability to learn and act upon dynamic information at a rapid pace in a cross-functional team environment;
  • The ability to use engineering, scientific, and technical skills to design, build, and leverage in silico, laboratory, and pilot-scale models for at-scale manufacturing improvements; and
  • Proficiency in technical problem solving, critical thinking, and the delivery of value-adding solutions with limited oversight and technical direction.
