Amgen is seeking a Senior Manager for Data Engineering to join 'Enterprise Engineering and Analytics' group at Amgen's Tampa or Thousand Oaks offices. We are looking for a passionate professional who is up to the challenge of blending the fast-changing technology landscape of Big Data analytics with the complex and high-impact space of pharmaceutical analytics.

The Data Engineering Manager is responsible to guide a team of talented engineers to develop and maintain next generation Enterprise Data and Analytics platform for both on premise and cloud services. The role also requires engaging architectural decisions, reviews of designs, scrum leading, growing the team via targeted hiring to build the development team, and operations of the platforms

A successful candidate will be a self-starter who can work in a dynamic environment, who brings in exceptional architecture experience and building large, high-scale Data platforms and Applications using Cloud and Big Data technologies like Hadoop ecosystem and Spark. Candidate must be uncompromisingly detail oriented, well organized and effective in verbal and written communications.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage a product team of 5-12 Platform Engineers that are the crux for developing and maintaining Big Data (Data Lake, Data Warehouse and Data Integration) platforms at Amgen
  • Direct the engineering team in design, execution and operation of the platforms - by providing guidance, vision, strategy and direction
  • Collaborate with product managers to develop roadmap and new features of the platform, and drive adoption and re-usability across enterprise - throughout the product lifecycle
  • Stay current with technology developments in the Data and Analytics industry, and help steer the evolution of platforms
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with peer organizations, partners, and software vendors
  • Work with customers and business stakeholders to understand the needs and deliver on their highest priority features and requirements incrementally
  • Work with PMO and effectively communicate with management team on the platform charter and scope
  • Manage budget responsibilities, development of staff, resource planning and goal setting for the team
  • Provide guidance, career development, and mentoring to technical team members, and help achieve maximum potential

Travel: Travel up to 10% may be essential

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Information Systems experience

OR

Master's degree and 4 years of Information Systems experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 6 years of Information Systems experience

OR

Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience

OR

High School Diploma /GED and 12 years of Information Systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Technical Skills
  • A demonstrated passion for working with data at scale and empowering organizations through data
  • 5+ years of management experience in building and guiding a strong technical team of engineers
  • 8+ years of Architecture and Administration experience on Big Data platforms - Data Warehouse Appliances (Teradata/Redshift), Hadoop (Cloudera) and Data Lake Technologies (AWS S3/Databricks/Other)
  • Experience in Architecting and Developing Big Data solutions on cloud (AWS or Other)
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, Continuous Delivery, and Agile development
  • Strong understanding of Micro-services and container-based development using Docker and Kubernetes ecosystem is a BIG plus
  • Experience working in a Software Product Development environment is a BIG plus
  • Experience creating a culture of technical excellence by leading code and design reviews, promoting mentorship, and identifying and promoting educational opportunities for engineers
