Paragon Gene Therapy, in Baltimore & Harmans, Maryland, provides industry-leading GMP development and manufacturing services for cutting-edge biopharmaceuticals such as recombinant viral vectors, next generation vaccines & hard-to-express recombinant proteins and oncolytic viruses.

This individual performs independently and productively as an Upstream Development Associate Scientist and is actively engaged in process and product development within a dynamic project team. Displays strong technical knowledge, initiative and scientific commitment, and makes significant scientific and technical contributions within Process Development Group.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Has knowledge/expertise relevant to Fermentation and Cell Cultivation Process Development including:
  • Strong understanding and application of aseptic techniques
  • Cell culture handling, cell growth characterization and optimization at different scale
  • Production of material at different scale using various platforms from flasks to stirred-tanks and packed bed bioreactors
  • Understanding of protein biochemistry (protein folding, protein degradation, aggregation, etc.) and experience in optimization of protein expression
  • General analytical methods applicable for proteins (SDS PAGE electrophoresis, western immunoblotting, plaque assay, etc.)
  • Instrument care, maintenance, troubleshooting and data interpretation
  • Document writing, data interpretation, presentation, statistical analysis and trending.


Education & Experience:

  • Associate Scientist - B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences or Chemical/Biochemical Engineer, 3-7 years of experience in an upstream/cell culture role in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Scientist - M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences or Chemical/Biochemical Engineer, 3-7 years of experience in an upstream/cell culture role in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Performs hands-on experiments to generate material for production of the recombinant proteins, VLPs, inclusion bodies, etc. from flasks to 200 litre bioreactors
  • Aids in design and execution of the experiments to develop and improve scalable protein production processes utilizing different expression systems with focus on mammalian and insect cell cultures;
  • The ability to work in team oriented environment is essential, as this person will work closely with other members of Process Development Group and participate on multidisciplinary project teams.
