Company Description:

Molecular Templates (MTEM) is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company targeting a variety of cancers through development of its innovative proprietary Engineered Toxin Body (ETB) platform. MTEM's first immunotoxin, MT-3724, is in clinical development for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Pipeline products for additional oncology targets are being advanced toward clinical development. For more information, please visit MTEM's website at

Position Overview:

Molecular Templates is seeking an accomplished and highly-motivated Scientist to contribute to antibody discovery and development projects for Research and Development (R&D). This position will be primarily lab-based and focused on design, engineering and characterization of the targeting antibody fragment within in the context of a recombinant immunotoxin. In addition, this Scientist will contribute to the strategic design and forward progress of biochemical assay development, screening campaigns and structure/function characterization. This requires expertise in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology skills and ability to manage competing priorities and projects, provide thought-leadership and deliver results.

Job Responsibilities will include:
  • Plan and execute assays in order to characterize and validate novel ETBs, including but not limited to: high-volume antibody sequence alignment and selection, construct design, scaffold and framework modification, liability analysis and stability engineering, structure/function testing, and affinity maturation campaigns.
  • Conduct antibody-based biologics and bispecific molecule design and characterization, including but not limited to: scaffold design within a fusion protein context, identification and testing of Ab fragment formats, epitope characterization, internalization assays, contribution to purification strategies, and general troubleshooting.
  • Analyze data, summarize conclusions and plans for further action, and present results, to team members and management in a clear and timely manner
  • Maintain knowledge of scientific trends and industry processes through readings, conferences and seminars in order to contribute to strategic development of novel ETB platforms
  • Document all procedures in an accurate and timely manner
  • Conduct general laboratory duties, including ordering supplies, and maintaining inventory (e.g. media or solution prep) and basic laboratory equipment
  • Execute and manage new projects, as needed

  • Master's degree with 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience; or PhD in Biochemistry or related field
  • Proven direct, strong experience working with the design, purification and function of antibodies, antibody fragments, or immunotoxins, required
  • Experience in industry and/or in oncology drug design, preferred
  • Expertise in cell and/or molecular biology techniques, column purification techniques (SEC or size-based) or chemical conjugation, preferred
  • Experience in one or more of the following: antibody-based biologics and bispecific molecule design and characterization; protein structural modeling (in silico and beyond); biophysical characterization of antibodies or antibody fragments
  • Experience with multi-parameter flow cytometry panel generation and design, preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and statistical analysis software
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills applied to investigations
  • Excellent project management, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Proven ability to design research projects independently and provide thought-leadership
