NextCure is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company located in Beltsville, MD, and focuses on the discovery and development of novel immunomedicines for the treatment of cancer and other immune-related diseases. We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Autoimmunity and Inflammation to discover novel autoimmune targets using our innovative FIND-AI™ platform, validate novel target biology, evaluate first-in-class therapeutics in relevant models and screens, and to manage collaborations with experts in the field. The candidate will report to senior management and should thrive in a fast-paced, innovative and adaptive environment.

Responsibilities
• Design and perform novel target validation strategies, leveraging in vitro studies with human or mouse immune cells and in vivo murine models
• Draft research workplans on a target by target basis
• Lead innovative research projects focused on understanding the role of adaptive and innate immunity in pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases
• Perform and plan studies to evaluate first-in-class immunotherapies addressing multiple inflammatory disorders
• Manage collaborations, including defining implementation of studies with clear objectives, deliverables and timelines
• Coordinate tasks across multiple projects and prioritizing as appropriate to manage timelines and deliverables
• Communicate scientific results and conclusions by providing written reports and by giving oral presentations for collaborators and potential partners

Required education and experience
• PhD or MD in biological sciences with expertise in immunology and relevant post-doctoral training or fellowship in lab
• 5+ years of experience in industry or faculty position

 

Qualifications
• Extensive knowledge in the biology of different immune cells including T cells and macrophages
• Proficient in primary immune cell and tissue-based analyses, tissue culture techniques; hands-on experience with mouse autoimmune disease models is necessary
• Demonstrated experience in cellular immunology: functional cell-based assays (proliferation, T cell activation, Treg suppression or activation, DC modulation, B and plasma cell modulation),
multi-color flow cytometry, cytokine analysis (intracellular, ELISA, Luminex), CD4 T cell and B cell subset differentiation and analysis, other immune cell subsets a plus
• Strong publication record
• Outstanding project management and organizational skills and ability to multitask and perform in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
• Strong interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and ability to work in matrix team environment
• Passionate with scientific innovation, self-starter, results-driven, and strives to continuously build knowledge and skills
