Job Summary

The Global Strategic Sourcing Category Manager -Capital Equipment will report into the Director of Capital and Construction within the Global Strategic Sourcing Organization at Amgen. This role will lead sourcing strategy, supplier selection and supplier relationship management for this category globally. The Sourcing Category Manager will be accountable to understand business strategy and then develop a comprehensive, long term, category strategy which will deliver maximum value to Amgen in this spend category.

Strategic Contribution
  • Serves as the category leader and market expert in this category for the company
  • Develops deep relationships with internal stakeholders to understand internal needs and strategies
  • Develops deep supplier relationships and expert understanding of the supply market
  • Collaboratively create a multi year strategy for the category that will delivery year over year productivity
  • Partners with internal and external stakeholder to drive the category management process
  • Delivers value added contracts to support business needs and sourcing decisions
  • Leads and influences stakeholder groups with sound and articulate business case recommendations (i.e. build vs buy strategy) with quantifiable financial benefits
  • Partner with peers in adjacent categories to find cross category synergies for improved service, cost or quality
  • Champion of Productivity efforts within stakeholder base

Delivering Value for Customers
  • Acts as an ambassador for the GSS function and the key point of contact for the Category Management process, both within and outside of GSS
  • Proactively and effectively communicates at all levels of the organization in order to drive decisions, create awareness and challenge stakeholders
  • Leverage Global Strategic Sourcing toolsets and processes to deliver efficient and effective sourcing decisions
  • Effectively identifies cross-category synergies where 'overlapping' stakeholder groups, geographic regions and / or where requirements exist (i.e. able to leverage data sources across multiple categories)
  • Responsive and adaptable to the evolving and complex business needs, with an ability to create and define the value/impact of different scenarios and recommendations
  • Ability to develop and model multiple business cases to demonstrate the potential opportunities and impact of options across a category
  • Able to utilize a fact-based process to develop multi-year category strategies, including internal business requirements and external market forces
  • Develops strategic insights and recommendations based on the outputs from the Category Management tools
  • Develop recommendations considering total cost of ownership
  • Develops strong partnerships and has ability to influence and manage stakeholders to ensure the delivery of timely and accurate data

Change Management
  • Ability to influence team members in a matrix organization, across geographies, including individuals with no direct reporting line
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving complex organizational needs
  • Ability to constructively challenge executive leadership; and ability to develop and evaluate strategic options, including risks and risk mitigation strategies
  • Compelling and persuasive communicator (oral and written) with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate cost models, including assumptions and rationale
  • Ability to apply Agile working principles in the team

Analytical & Technica l
  • Proven ability to use the Category Management process and ability to use relevant tools to develop strategic plans
  • Ability to develop baseline cost models to accurately represent current state and ability to build dynamic total cost of ownership models with multiple scenarios in order to evaluate and quantify value
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools (power point and excel), analytical tools, ERP systems etc.
  • CPM qualification (US) or CIPS qualification (UK) is desirable


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Doctorate degree
OR
Master's degree and 3 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience
OR
Associate's degree and 10 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience
OR
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience
AND
Previous managerial experience directly managing people and/or experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Solid understanding of procurement/sourcing/category management methodology and able to drive value for customers leveraging fit-for-purpose sourcing levers
  • Excellent and disciplined project management and prioritization skills with ability to react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently
  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities and have ability to drive multiple simultaneous projects
  • Strong business acumen in order to quickly understand functional/category dynamics and develop category strategies that drive value
  • Proven ability to deliver complex multi-regional and/or global projects in a matrixed and global environment
  • Broad knowledge of the market forces shaping a customer's business context (e.g. supplier base, legal & regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)
  • Ability to understand external market information, including ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations
  • Ability to understand cost drivers, internal costs and future demand and re requirements
  • Ability to provide thought leadership, ability to influence and actively shape strategy
  • Strong financial acumen and problem solving skills
  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
  • Clear thinker, disciplined, logical and organized with the ability to prioritize
  • Strong oral and written communication / presentation / collaboration skills
  • Strong executive communicator with the ability to create and communicate complex business cases in a simple and effective manner
