The Manager, Controlled Environment Agriculture is responsible for working as a part of the Elo team to develop novel tools, technologies and assays as they relate to genome editing technologies, phenotyping and controlled environment agriculture. The Manager, Controlled Environment Agriculture will not only be involved in internal technology development programs but also supports partnered activities and projects consistent with the company goals.

  • Embodies Elos spirit of impactful innovation in multiple crops using a systems-level approach to deliver meaningful products to the market
  • Conducts high quality laboratory research that includes but is not limited to controlled environment agricultural production, rapid cycling protocol development and LED light optimization in multiple crops
  • Delivers stable environments in the greenhouse and growth chamber suitable for plant regeneration, trait phenotyping, and life cycle management
  • Acts as an expert resource for plant cultivation and propagation, assisting with planting, transplanting, controlled pollination, acclimatization from tissue culture, tissue sampling and seed collection of diverse crop species. Continuously searches for new methods to improve crop growth and production
  • Responsible for managing facilities, equipment and data systems related to controlled environment agriculture across projects, potentially including CEA personnel; maintains rigorous organization, cleanliness and documentation of all CEA material, systems and workflows
  • Establishes methods, equipment and processes that support rapid, precise and field-predictive evaluation of improved germplasm
  • Scouts for pests and pathogens and maintains excellent control through proactive hygienic practices and appropriate control responses
  • Acts as an expert resource for horticulture, plant physiology, plant pathology, agronomy and phenotyping, supporting the design and execution of CEA experiments
  • Represents Elo in professional forums and conferences; delivers technical presentations internally or at technical meetings as requested by the company


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

  • Experience developing and managing controlled environment production of diverse plant species as well as rigorous scientific development of novel methods to phenotype and improve plant performance as well as to decrease production timelines
  • Expertise in horticulture, plant physiology, plant pathology, agronomy and phenotyping
  • Ability to design, develop and execute experiments based on high-level concepts
  • Ability to think creatively, critically and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team

  • Experience with LED light recipe development, hydroponics and tissue culture
  • Strong leadership skills, demonstrated by successful outcomes and mentoring
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Nucleic acid sequence analysis interface (Vector NTI or SnapGene) and familiarity with common bioinformatic tools typically used in the industry

  • Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) or Masters degree in horticulture, plant physiology, plant biology, plant pathology or a related field and at least 8 years technical experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Travel Requirements
  • On occasion, the Manager Controlled Environment Agriculture will be expected to travel to conferences, workshops and or business meetings as needed.
