The department of Safety Pharmacology and Animal Research Center (SPARC) at Amgen Inc., an AAALAC accredited research facility, is seeking a Laboratory Animal Veterinarian with a research focus to join a dynamic, fast-paced team overseeing all aspects of the veterinary care program for multiple animal species, while providing surgical, compliance and scientific leadership to support our drug discovery and development pipeline.

Our team partners with more than 200 research staff to perform preclinical research in our quest to develop novel human therapeutics. We need an ACLAM diplomate with surgical experience to lead and guide our disease model development in rodent models and in regulated species. An emphasis on surgical experience with cardiovascular models or with devices would be ideal.

This role's responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
  • Direct support for development and maintenance of guidelines, processes and procedures to meet federal, state and local regulatory requirements and AAALAC accreditation standards
  • Provide leadership to the Animal Welfare and Compliance (AWC) and Integrated Vivarium Management (IVM) groups
  • Provide veterinary leadership and direction for internal large animal surgical model program
  • Responsibility and accountability for the delivery of high-quality in vivo procedures, including surgery, anesthesia, analgesia, and post-operative support to research models
  • Be part of a veterinary team to provide a program of adequate veterinary care and preventive medicine
  • Partner with departmental colleagues, and stakeholders (e.g., drug discovery or safety scientists) to assure that animal resources are used effectively to advance project goals
  • Develop and manage a team of in vivo technical staff; contribute to development of study designs as a veterinarian and subject matter expert; perform and oversee animal model execution, and data reporting to project teams
  • Ensure veterinary medical record and scientific data integrity record compliance
  • Perform the role of Principal Investigator (PI), assist in the writing and review of Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) protocols, veterinary consultations, post-approval programs and perform a role as a committee member of the IACUC
  • Assist in Training Program management and perform training of staff in technical procedural skills including anesthesia for rodent and non-rodent animal species
  • Perform external business partner site audits or protocol evaluations for our External Scientific Ethical Research Committee (ESERC)
  • On-call veterinarian support (shared duties)

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • Board Certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)
  • Licensed to practice in at least one state of the USA and ability to obtain California veterinary license within 1 year of hire


Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years' experience in animal model development, clinical practice and surgery with regulated species in a drug development setting
  • 2+ years' of postdoctoral residency training in laboratory animal medicine
  • Exemplary communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills
  • Experience managing and leading teams in a matrixed, cross-site organization
  • Experience in an environment requiring partnership and collaboration with a broad audience of contributors in which communication and management skills achieve results
  • Lab experience including any or all of: the designing of studies, providing oversight of in vivo research, performing surgery on multiple species, imaging modalities, vivarium biosecurity programs
  • Institutional Animal Care and Use protocol writing, review process, and committee membership
  • Experience as an ad hoc or counsel member for AAALACi
