Position Overview:

Molecular Templates is seeking an experienced and highly-motivated professional to be an integral part of the Company's R&D team. The Manager will be responsible for supervision, management and execution of core lab services related to ETB production and analysis. This position will serve as an intellectual leader and technical expert, responsible for troubleshooting and identification of process improvement areas, and provide oversight to research associates, including training, day-to-day supervision and first-line reviewer of experimental execution and data analysis. Additional responsibilities may include onboarding of additional methods or modification and transfer of existing testing methods. This position requires excellent management and communication skills, ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities and ability to plan for future growth of department and staff development. The candidate should possess technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, along with ability to operate independently and provide leadership to staff and projects.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversee ETB Development Core laboratory, including scheduling and monitoring core lab activities, supervision of direct reports and training for new employees and techniques.
  • Develop, perform and manage protein expression and purification, plus analysis, including but not limited to: E.coli- based expression systems (e.g. transformations, monitoring growth kinetics), liquid chromatography (e.g. affinity, SEC, ion exchange) and analytical protein assays (e.g. SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, ELISA).
  • Identify and implement process improvements, particularly for optimization, efficiency and growth.
  • Analyze and perform quality checks on data, and report results to team members and management in a clear and timely manner.
  • Document all procedures and ensure that protocols are up-to-date in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the ETB Development core functions
  • Execute and manage new projects, such as drafting R&D SOPs for new protocols for standard core lab services, as needed
  • Maintain/upkeep core equipment and evaluate new equipment, as needed

 


Qualifications:

 

 

 

  • BS and 6+ years of relevant industry experience; or advanced degree in Life Sciences with 4+ years of relevant experience, providing both analytical and technical expertise
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising direct reports
  • Comprehensive understanding of protein expression and purification, required
  • Experience in leadership role of a core laboratory or core resource team, preferred
  • Prior experience with bacterial toxins or protein therapeutics, required
  • Excellent problem-solving, data analysis and computational skills
  • Excellent project management, time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to spend 50% or more performing bench work and provide back-up according to core scheduling
  • Ability to function independently, work collaboratively, and provide thought-leadership
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities with a high degree of professionalism
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. and must be able to stand, crouch, sit, bend, or stretch for extended periods of time.

 


Reporting Structure:

This position has supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Director, Core Services, R&D.
