ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Senior Director, Global Scientific and Medical Communications leads the Medical Affairs communications function by establishing global strategies and ensuring their tactical regional execution. The Sr. Senior Director provides tools for dissemination of fair balanced, objective, scientific information and education about Santen product(s) as well as gathering medical intelligence to better patient outcomes. The Senior Director demonstrates expertise and knowledge of products, patient treatment trends, clinical trials, and scientific activities within the disease area. The Senior Director will lead creation and execution of scientific publications across all global products. The Senior Director serves as a source of medical and scientific advice for management and colleagues in Development, Research and Marketing organizations, by virtue of extensive drug development experience and product knowledge.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND KEY DELIVERABLES:
  • Create, develop and execute Medical Affairs market preparation strategies related to communications for all global products across three therapeutic areas (FOTE, BOTE, Glaucoma)
  • Contribute to alignment and consistency of Medical Affairs processes and procedures across regions, including appropriate selection and implementation of technology solutions
  • Communicate global strategies to regional MA and ensure appropriate regionalization of tactics and scientific materials
  • Establish strategy and lead cross functional Publications Committees for all global products, including supervision of Publications Manager
  • Direct function of Global External Publications Steering Committees for three therapeutic areas (FOTE, BOTE, Glaucoma)
  • Drive development, training and dissemination of core scientific content across all global products
  • Contribute to Medical Thought Leader engagement strategy for all global therapeutic areas
  • Plan and direct execution of Medical Education strategies across all global therapeutic areas
  • Oversee the communication platform of the patient advocacy group and its engagement with key patient groups.
  • Oversee the congress and medical education and grants process
  • Facilitate and drive content for global strategic Advisory Boards in support of Scientific and Medical Communications
  • Collaborate with and train Clinical Development, Clinical Sciences, Medical Information and others to ensure single scientific voice to our customers
  • Provide medical leadership and education to internal customers
  • Establish and manage Scientific Communications budgets for all global products
  • Collaborate with commercial colleagues to ensure strategic alignment within Medical Affairs and effectively communicate the Medical Affairs communications strategy for all global products, including participation in commercial advisory board preparation
  • Provide input to scientific research at all stages of development including LCM for global projects
  • Establish and lead compliant medical education grants committee
  • Keep abreast of the current literature, therapeutic issues and competitive landscape related to the relevant disease areas of focus
  • Establish status as a knowledgeable and trustworthy medical and scientific resource for Health Care Providers (HCPs) with expertise and knowledge of supported product(s), treatment trends, clinical trials and scientific research
  • Direct speaker training for non-promotional and promotional programs on product knowledge, clinical/scientific data and information consistent with established company policies and compliance guidelines

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced degree MD or PhD in relevant scientific field required
  • Previous Medical Affairs experience required (15-20 years)
  • Prior experience (5-10 years) leading global publications efforts required
  • Familiarity with the ophthalmic community required (5-10 years)
  • Creativity and innovativeness are clearly expected
  • Demonstrated success in a global matrix organization
  • Proven track record of success, especially in the area of scientific communications strategies, medical affairs strategies, and thought leader engagement
  • Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and strong presentation skills
  • Authored papers in leading journals or evidence of having supported such publications
  • Presented scientific data in conferences and supported the preparation of such presentations by HCPs
  • Awareness and understanding of global regulatory guidelines (FDA, PDMA, PhRMA, etc.)
  • Outstanding leadership characteristics exemplified through clarity of goal setting, the ability to inspire others, to set a positive example by providing assistance, recognition and encouragement
