Job Title: Group Leader   Introduction to Job Post: Takara Bio USA, Inc. develops and commercializes quality, innovative nucleic acid library preparation products, designed to enable researchers to analyze challenging samples that may be limited in both the amount and quality of nucleic acid input (both RNA and DNA). We are looking for an experienced senior level scientist (Group Leader) to join our dynamic, team-oriented research group and take the lead in developing innovative, cutting edge NGS library preparation products to solve these low-input needs. The Group Leader role reports to the Associate Director (or higher) and is responsible for designing, undertaking and analyzing information from controlled laboratory-based investigations, experiments and trials. The Group Leader will supervise and mentor a group of research associates and junior scientists. The successful candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a demonstrated track record of independent product development from initial idea to finished product, in-depth knowledge of molecular biology principles and practice, and solid experience in genetic testing, reproductive health technologies or a related field.   The Group Leader role is office-based.   Travel, including overnight, may be required approximately 5%.   Essential Functions:

  • Plans, coordinates, and monitors timely execution and completion of various research projects by managing the activities of a scientific team of research associates and junior scientists.
  • Ensures work conducted by group is of high quality, exhibiting good experimental design, data summary and interpretation.
  • Actively mentors and trains group members in good experimental design and analysis.
  • Works closely and independently, through regular communication, with Product Managers to understand market trends and competition relevant to product line(s) managed. Proposes plans for development of a product line as a whole; and proactively works to obtain Product Mangers’ support.
  • Demonstrates ownership for the success and growth of product line(s); working with Product Managers, Operations, Bioinformatics and other departments to identify and monitor key performance metrics and meet customer requirements and to ensure smooth development, launch and support of products according to identified proposals and within stated deadlines.
  • Together with Product Managers and others guides junior scientists in through the product development process, including design of specifications, transfer to manufacturing and drafting of related documentation.
  • Serves as resource to R&D and other departments within the organization, including Product Management, Planning, QC, and Product Transfer in a particular field of specialization.
  • Supports Sales and Technical Support representatives on technical matters.
  • Represents R&D at scientific meetings in front of customers and/or collaborators, including presenting seminars on TBUSA products in area of expertise.
  • Develops and maintains an external network of key research collaborators and scientific advisors in the academic/industrial community.

  Education/Certification, Experience, and Competencies:

  • Ph.D. in relevant scientific discipline with preference for candidates with some postdoctoral experience.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years relevant industrial experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Detailed and broad knowledge of scientific techniques and applications relevant to NGS library prep, sequencing and data analysis.
  • Expertise in the isolation of nucleic acids for NGS library prep from one or more clinically relevant samples (FFPE, blood, exosomes, ctDNA/cfDNA).
  • In-depth knowledge of preimplantation genetic testing methods (PGT) and data analysis preferred.
  • Highly effective analytical, problem solving and judgment skills, with demonstrated ability to mentor others in these skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to manage the work of others.
  • Consistent success in developing commercially viable products.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience managing external collaborations.
  • Good knowledge of the biomedical research industry.
