Southern Research's Drug Development Division is a contract research organization (CRO) that provides commercial and government clients with a wide variety of nonclinical and clinical trial support services.  We offer an array of studies including both in vitro and in vivo testing of small molecule compounds, vaccines, biologics and other test articles in therapeutic areas, such as infectious disease, CNS and cancer.  Our nationally recognized team of dedicated individuals provides expertise and services spanning basic research to advanced studies under FDA GLP regulations.

General Summary
This position is responsible for providing clinical pathology services by evaluating, reviewing, and interpreting clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation and urinalysis data.  The senior veterinary clinical pathologist will assist in direction of technical, clinical staff on proper equipment use and specimen handling and will assist with instrumentation validation activities as required.  The position reports directly to the Associate Director Pathology.

Key Responsibilities

  •  Provides clinical pathology services by interpreting clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis results of toxicology or infectious disease studies as required.
  •  Reviews and interprets clinical pathology data, including correlating findings with appropriate clinical data.
  •  Ensures that laboratory personnel and equipment are compliant with regulatory requirements.
  •  Interacts with clients to discuss progress of studies and to develop client specific protocols.

Position Specific Responsibilities

  •  Conducts reviews of clinical pathology slides and performs clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis evaluations.
  • Writes clinical pathology narratives for study reports and prepares relevant sections of proposals.
  •  Monitors laboratory quality control and consults with others on technical and quality control issues.
  •  Ensures that laboratory personnel and equipment are compliant with regulatory requirements.
  •  Interfaces with various internal groups and/or external consultants for the preparation of reports.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

  •  PhD in Pathology or other relevant scientific discipline and 5 years of experience in a research and development environment, OR
    Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and 5 years of experience in a research and development environment, OR
    MS degree in Pathology or other relevant scientific discipline and 10 years of experience in a research and development environment.
  • Ability to recognize and interpret clinical data and clinical pathological abnormalities in research animals and to incorporate the results into the study report.
  •  Knowledge of GLP regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to supervise staff.
