Company Overview
The complex ecosystem of bacteria that comprise our gut microbiome are inextricably tied to the quality of human health. Federation Bio is a start-up company poised to leverage the power of active microbial communities to address high unmet medical needs. Our approach lies at the intersection of microbiology, chemistry, and genomics and uniquely enables us to harness the power of the microbiome and define the potential of this new therapeutic modality.
Federation Bio was founded by two leading academics in the microbiome field (Stanford Professors Michael Fischbach and Dylan Dodd) as well as Venrock, one of the oldest venture capital funds in the United States.
Description of Role
We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Immunologist to lead our ambitious effort to develop therapeutic microbial consortiums capable of tuning the immune system with molecular precision. We are looking for a candidate with good hands, a good attitude, and the ability to attain a high degree of independence in a fast-paced and dynamic research environment. In this role, you will be responsible for studying how the microbiome influences the immune system using state-of-the-art immunology, microbiology, and molecular biology techniques. You will be expected to be a flexible, adaptable, and intellectually rigorous team member and you will play a critical role in the design and development of microbiome therapeutics at the absolute forefront of the field.
Core Responsibilities and Opportunities:
- Serve as the immunology lead on an interdisciplinary research team
- Design and execute careful in vivo immunological studies in germ-free mice to elucidate the link between the immune system and the microbiome
- Provide expert immunology advice to guide research strategy and indication selection
- Collect, organize, and present scientific data to the research and management teams; clearly stating interpretations and proposed next steps
- Work rigorously as an individual and passionately as part of a team
REQUIREMENTS
Desired Skill Mastery:
- Isolation of immune cells from the gut, skin, blood, spleen, CNS, and other murine organs
- Analysis and sorting of immune cells using multi-color flow cytometry
- Analysis of T cell cytokine profiles using ELISA, MSD-ECL, and/or CBA
- Ex-vivo co-culturing of T cells and APCs
- Working with human PBMCs and cord blood
- Basic mouse handling, in vivo procedures, and tissue harvesting experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Immunology or related field
- Experience with NGS-methods for T cell analysis (e.g. scRNAseq, ATACseq)
- Functional knowledge of key immunological mouse models (immunodeficient, interleukin KOs, TCR transgenics, etc.)
- Experience with murine immunization and characterization of the associated adaptive immune response
- Knowledge of how the immune system in the GI tract samples, processes, and responds to antigens
- Experience stimulating and profiling human PBMCs
- Experience with PCR, cloning, and bacterial cell culture.
