AbbVie is investing heavily in a new research enterprise in Cambridge, Boston - the Foundational Neuroscience Center (FNC). The FNC is investigating the fundamental biological mechanisms underpinning neurodegenerative diseases, initially with a focus on Alzheimer's disease. Recently, we have decided to expand our research remit and to take advantage of shared disease mechanisms, to build a new research team focused on Parkinson's disease (PD) to discover and develop disease-modifying therapeutics for this devastating disease.

We are seeking an innovative, driven scientist to lead the PD team, focusing on important disease mechanisms. The role affords an incredible opportunity for the right candidate: to recruit, build and lead a new research group numbering between 20 scientists. The PD leader will be accountable and responsible for the research strategy and success of PD drug discovery programs. This team will be comprised of a core group of about 10 scientists for which the PD Leader will have direct, line responsibility, with the rest of the group being embedded in other functional groups (e.g., in vitro core, in vivo core, translational biology, Proteostasis Biology Area) that will provide scientific support for the Parkinson's disease area. It is anticipated that the PD leader will advise on the most appropriate allocation of positions into existing and new research teams. The PD Leader position requires an exceptional, experienced scientist, either from academia or industry, who has significant insight into Parkinson's disease as evidenced either by publications, or major involvement in industry drug discovery programs, or both.

The PD Leader should have a significant academic network, as an important part of this role will be to foster and lead a number of academic collaborations with top laboratories working in this area. The ideal candidate will be an astute risk-taker and not encumbered by the status quo. The successful applicant will initiate a program of novel science, both internal and external, that will reveal and preclinically validate novel targets that will lead to drug discovery projects. The applicant will be expected to attract, lead and retain an excellent team of scientists.

In addition, the PD leader will be a key partner with clinical development colleagues in the advancement of programs through clinical trials and with business development in evaluation and recommendation of external partnerships. While the PD group will be located at our Cambridge site in Massachusetts, Neuroscience Discovery Research at AbbVie has a significant component in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Parkinson's disease research will draw upon capabilities and resources at both sites. As such, excellent communication skills are required, and experience of transnational collaborations will be an advantage.

The Parkinson's Disease BA leader will also be a member of the FNC Leadership team and we are seeking individuals with the potential to aspire to more senior research leadership positions.
