Job Details
Within their group, the Director of Cardiovascular Discovery Biology will be expected to organize their scientists in an effective manner, oversee the setting of individual goals, maintain open and regular communications regarding administrative and organizational matters, recognize excellent achievements and manage difficult situations. The successful candidate will also look after the career development of the members of the group including providing growth opportunities, managing promotions and establishing a succession plan.

This is a key leadership position within the Cardiovascular & Fibrosis Discovery Biology organization reporting directly to the Vice President and includes participationon the senior leadership team.
The successful candidate will have broad responsibilities to lead a group of highly skilled and productive biologists in pursuit of novel molecular targets and innovative therapies for heart failure. Specific responsibilities include leading a group of PhD and non-PhD scientists to: 1) Explore the basic biology of heart failure;
2) Identify and validate new therapeutic targets;
3) Oversee the design, build and optimization of suites of assays and animal models to support lead identification and optimization
4) To forge strong relationships in at team setting with peers in adjacent areas of Drug Discovery including medicinal chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, toxicology, pharmaceutics and protein sciences, etc to identify and characterize novel molecular entities suitable for clinical trials. This includes setting program goals, recommending cross-portfolio priorities and deploying resources to successfully meet the objectives.
The successful candidate is expected to be a go-to person for all scientific questions around heart failure by staying up to date on the latest preclinical and clinical research in the field and to assist in gathering competitive intelligence. In accordance with approved publication and presentation plans, the Director will be expected to write manuscripts, contribute to regulatory documents and present research at scientific conferences. The successful candidate will also work with leaders from across the cardiovascular therapeutic area to set the overarching strategy, represent drug discovery on development teams and seek out and assess in-licensing opportunities.
Responsibilities
Line Management of multiple PhD scientists and their associate scientists
Setting drug discovery strategy for cardiovascular R&D
Leading new target acquisition efforts
Assisting with technical due diligence activities for in-licensing opportunities
Co--leading drug discovery working groups
Representing CV Discovery on clinical development teams.
Qualifications
Position requires a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacologyor related field, witha demonstrated expertise inthe cardiovascularsciences based on publication record and/or a clear track record of successful delivery of cardiovascular-related drug discovery projects.
An MD degree withextensive post-doctoral experience in the above fields will also be acceptable.
Experience in thesub-field of heart failure would be a plus.
The position also requires 15+ years experience in biopharmaceutical drug discovery in an industrial setting and demonstration of excellent communication and people management skills.
