Amgen is searching for a Director - Global Diagnostic Payer Strategy Lead in our Global Pricing & Market Access (GPMA) team. This individual will be responsible for the development and implementation of the companion In Vitro Diagnostic payer strategies across our pipeline portfolio. Further, the individual will define and develop new tools and techniques to embed companion IVD payer needs into Global Access Planning. Finally, the individual will identify training needs and make recommendations to the GPMA leadership team in order to increase companion IVD knowledge base across the team. The role will work out of our Thousand Oaks headquarters.

In the context of a rapidly evolving payer environment, Amgen's increasing emphasis on geographic expansion and acquisition/licensing as drivers of growth, and a commitment to demonstrate product value, Amgen requires an increasingly sophisticated reimbursement and pricing capability to support market access strategies (an important source for competitive advantage). The Global Pricing & Market Access team, within the Global Value Access & Policy (GVA&P) function, is a team committed to excellence in this capability in order to position Amgen for continued success. This team is responsible for strategic planning of value and access for all Amgen molecules in development, beginning in Phase I-II and extending throughout commercialization across the Amgen portfolio. Additionally, the team is responsible for global strategic pricing, including recommendations for global price bands and launch sequence. Each Global Access Plan integrates coverage and reimbursement, pricing, value evidence, and policy into the development of a strategic plan that supports the overarching commercial position and links to the clinical attributes of the molecule. As the number of molecules in our pipeline with companion In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) grows we are creating this new role to enable us to embed In Vitro Diagnostic payer strategies into the Global Access Plans for all Amgen molecules in development across our pipeline portfolio. The initial area of focus will be on a key late stage cardiovascular asset and our early oncology pipeline.

The Global Diagnostic Payer Strategy Lead will work closely with our team of therapeutic Global Payer Leads cross the GPMA team to embed companion In Vitro Diagnostic payer strategies into the Global Access Plans. This will include the development of IVD situation analysis, identification of critical success factors, development of companion IVD pricing and reimbursement strategy, among other access activities as well as the execution of these plans/strategies with the regions. The Global Diagnostic Payer Strategy Lead will also work closely with the In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) Group to co-ordinate functional implementation with partner functions. The IVD Group are responsible for the successful transition of a biomarker to marketed IVD to support the clinical development strategy for regulatory approval and commercialization.

The Global Diagnostic Payer Strategy Lead is a critical new role at Amgen requiring a breadth of communication expertise across a broad range of stakeholders, influencing decision-making through negotiation, and addressing conflict by building productive working relationships across functional areas both within and outside the company.

Internal stakeholders include global colleagues in GPMA, marketing, research and development, health economics, regulatory, operations and government affairs as well as regional VA&P colleagues within the US, Europe, Intercontinental and Japan/Asia-Pacific/Australia. The Director will also work directly and collaboratively with VA&P colleagues in 6 select country affiliates in order to inform the development of IVD global access strategies and evidence generation.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of market access and/or payer experience, including 1 year of companion IVD pricing and reimbursement experience


Master's degree and 7 years of market access and/or payer experience, including 1 year of companion IVD pricing and reimbursement experience


Bachelor's degree and 9 years of market access and/or payer experience, including 1 year of companion IVD pricing and reimbursement experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years experience in companion IVD pipeline development and knowledge of reimbursement submission requirements of IVD devices in multiple markets globally
  • Strong understanding of the IVD payer environment in major markets, including coverage and reimbursement, pricing, health technologies assessment and funding flows
  • Proven decision-making/recommendation experience regarding pricing and access for IVDs
  • Ability to formulate IVD policy strategy and implement these strategies to shape external pricing and reimbursement environment
  • Ability to conduct situation analysis of the external pricing and reimbursement environment and synthesize relevant information to embed IVD strategies into global access plans
  • Ability to develop and test value messages and value evidence with payers in order to determine the most compelling way in which to demonstrate and communicate IVD value to payers
  • Ability to translate complex IVD situation and pricing analyses to effectively communicate impact to Amgen business
  • Ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative studies and to formulate IVD price strategy recommendation
  • Ability to review clinical and health economic literature, including disease state information, clinical trial design and results, and pharmacoeconomic studies, in order to understand implications for value to payers
  • Ability to manage in a highly fluid, interactive, matrixed environment and build
  • Strong, successful business partnerships with affiliate, regional and global colleagues

The successful candidate will bring strong knowledge of IVD market access in the pharma/biotech business, a deep understanding of the IVD payer environment, and strong strategic and analytical skills for conducting appropriate analyses and decisions to support management of Amgen's business.
